My Husband's Wife
In a short period of time, Alice Feeney has become the queen of psychological thrillers. Her latest release, MY HUSBAND’S WIFE, is clear evidence of this and may be her best novel to date.
Eden Fox is jogging the streets of Hope Falls, the small English village to which she and her husband recently relocated from London. In the early morning, she passes by the art shop that has signs posted about the exhibit later that evening featuring her own work. Eden returns to the hillside manor where she now resides --- Spyglass --- and is frustrated to find that her key doesn’t work. She bangs on the knocker only to be surprised when another woman, about 10 years her senior, answers the door. This person insists that she’s Eden Fox, which is backed up by her husband, Harrison, who states that he doesn’t know who she is or why she’s claiming to be his wife.
"There is no way that I thought any sense could be made out of the far-reaching events that took place, but I was proven wrong. It is everything that a great psychological thriller is supposed to be..."
This kicks off a novel where the reader is taken down the rabbit hole from the very start and will feel like there is no escape from the insanity of this Wonderland. We then are introduced to a different character and timeline set six months earlier in London. Birdy has been given a death sentence --- terminal cancer with zero chance of survival. This makes her reevaluate her entire existence right up until the point that she learns she has inherited Spyglass from a grandmother she didn’t even know she had.
If you are scratching your head at this point, I do not blame you as I was pulled into the same dilemma and made the decision to simply ride it out. I was not disappointed as the madness became equally stupefying and delightful with each passing chapter.
There are many secrets that are uncovered here and those that link the various characters in both the present and the past. Some answers may be found courtesy of Eden and Harrison’s daughter, 18-year-old Gabriella, who has lived at a care facility since a tragic accident that has left her almost completely uncommunicative. Every new bit of evidence that is revealed only clouds the story and makes the possibility of anything being deciphered a distant one. It is here where the brilliance of this novel shines as Feeney is very much in control and will steer this ship into uncharted territories of psychological revelations that will leave readers reeling.
The only thing more impressive than the myriad plot twists in MY HUSBAND’S WIFE is how Feeney draws everything together in the end and puts a nice bow on it to boot. There is no way that I thought any sense could be made out of the far-reaching events that took place, but I was proven wrong. It is everything that a great psychological thriller is supposed to be, and I remain in awe of Feeney for this tremendous achievement.
