My Final Word: Holding Tight to the Issues that Matter Most

Charles Colson, who passed away in 2012, was a former presidential aide to Richard Nixon and founder of the international ministry Prison Fellowship. He wrote numerous bestselling books --- including BORN AGAIN, LOVING GOD, HOW NOW SHALL WE LIVE? and THE GOOD LIFE --- and his radio broadcast, “BreakPoint,” continues to reach 6.5 million listeners each week. Colson’s legacy includes not only his written work and established ongoing ministries, but also the fact that he donated all of his royalties, awards and speaking fees to Prison Fellowship Ministries.

MY FINAL WORD is a compilation of unaired scripts that were in development before Colson passed away. His scriptwriters and assistants spent untold hours gathering his work, editing it, and formatting into book form. Quite literally, MY FINAL WORD is his last reflective comments on issues pertinent for a socially engaged church to both consider and then act upon.

"Thankfully, Colson was no mere doomsayer; he offered countless principles and solutions for overcoming the ills of our day. As a Christ follower and as a man, he believed that the answer to turning America around...was to be found in the church of Jesus Christ being changed first."

In 12 topically appointed chapters, Christ followers will be privy to Colson’s take on even the most recent of societal trends as he discusses through the study of apologetics; bioethics and life issues; Christians and public life; church and culture; crimes, punishment and justice; happiness; homosexuality and the church; Islam versus Christianity; judicial usurpation; persecution; suffering; and war of the worldviews. Each chapter is complete with a variety of short to medium-length essays that Colson wrote and could have been shared on “BreakPoint.” Thus each topic is succinct, to the point, and powerfully rich by hitting on all the major elements under discussion. And discuss is what you will want to do after reading each and every essay.

Eloquent and masterful, Colson was also kind, big-hearted, funny and humble. Readers not familiar with his background as a politician, then disgraced jail inmate, will be astounded at the man’s transformation after he became a Christian. He spent the rest of his life loving God and serving others. Using every God-given talent he had, which made him so successful in the political realm, Colson reached far and wide to tell folks around the world of how Jesus changed him and could give them hope as well. Perhaps one of the most obvious takeaways from this last text of Colson’s is how visionary he was, given what Americans are facing today politically, socially, economically and in regard to religious freedoms. Colson, in a word, was wise and literally (through his speaking, radio and written works) predicted many of the woes that the United States is currently battling against.

Thankfully, Colson was no mere doomsayer; he offered countless principles and solutions for overcoming the ills of our day. As a Christ follower and as a man, he believed that the answer to turning America around (to its former exemplary status worldwide) was to be found in the church of Jesus Christ being changed first. Once the church does its job, then the culture will follow. Colson’s final word is this: Be present and continue standing for truth, no matter what the cost.
