Look Both Ways
If you think you knew Linwood Barclay before, I suggest you strap in for the ride of your life. His latest release, LOOK BOTH WAYS, is unlike anything he has previously written.
A deliriously fun thrill ride inspired by Barclay’s decades-long love of cars, the book lampoons the current driverless or autonomous vehicle craze in a deadly way. He also clearly draws upon both the high-octane suspense and supernatural chills of novels he deems personal favorites: Richard Matheson’s DUEL and Stephen King’s CHRISTINE. LOOK BOTH WAYS may read like a suspense/thriller, but it also expertly toes the lines of horror and sci-fi.
"LOOK BOTH WAYS requires nerves of steel and a strong stomach to survive --- sort of like the literary equivalent of a high-tech rollercoaster ride. Just remember to hold on for your life and keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times!"
Garrett Island, located off the coast of Massachusetts, is hosting an expo involving a fleet of driverless vehicles made by Arrival Inc. Neither the residents of this small island nor the varied organizers are aware of the presence of a man in a cheap disguise who is actually a direct competitor of the company.
Brandon Kyle blames the team at Arrival for the recent deadly bad luck of his own driverless car and plans to make them pay. To do this, he has commandeered the assistance of someone on the inside who is helping him inject a computer virus into every single vehicle. This essentially will turn them into merciless killing machines, targeting anyone in their sights for death.
Public relations executive and resident islander Sandra Montrose is deeply involved in the expo demonstration and will witness the horror firsthand. The nightmare that is about to unfold will also include her children, Katie and Archie, in separate adventures once the entire island and the local mall fall under attack.
Like a nasty car wreck on the highway, it is hard to look away. Since the vehicles are extremely intelligent and are even able to get inside the mall to mow down panicked shoppers, it feels like there is no way to defeat them in time to stop the bloodshed. However, Sandra will prove to be a much stronger adversary than Brandon ever could have imagined, and the novel’s final act will leave you breathless.
LOOK BOTH WAYS requires nerves of steel and a strong stomach to survive --- sort of like the literary equivalent of a high-tech rollercoaster ride. Just remember to hold on for your life and keep your arms and legs in the vehicle at all times!
