Look Again

“Honey?”

Will was sleeping soundly…His breathing sounded congested…She told herself not to worry, but once you’ve had a sick kid, you hold your breath forever.

“Will?”

His nose was a ski slope that was the beginner version of hers, and people often mistook him for her biological child…She found herself wondering if Timothy Braverman looked like his mother, too.

Ellen Gleeson has found a missing child notice in with her regular mail. Normally, she would toss the card into the trash, but one of the children’s photos shows an uncanny resemblance to her adopted son, Will. Try as she might, she cannot put the image of the lost boy out of her mind. Will was legally adopted; Ellen went through all the right channels, did all the required paperwork, and followed the law perfectly. So why does she feel a nagging doubt? For now, she needs to focus on her job.

At work at a local newspaper, Ellen learns that they are facing another round of staff cuts, so she needs to be at the top of her game if she is to stay employed. Marcelo, her charismatic boss, seems to have a soft spot for her, but how much weight that will carry when it comes to choosing who goes and who stays is anybody’s guess. As a single mother, Ellen can’t afford to mess up. Unfortunately, in the cutthroat world of business, she has a formidable rival in her colleague Sarah. In addition to their jobs, it may be that both women have their eyes on another prize: Marcelo.

Marcelo --- dark, handsome, charming and single --- is certainly a distraction, and he must know it. But can he remain impartial and still be true to his heart? Ellen has more to worry about than Marcelo, though, for she cannot shake the urge to trace Will’s history. It becomes an obsession that takes her on a journey into a family’s dirty little secrets. She soon realizes that, if the truth were to come out, the consequences could be staggering.

Ellen struggles with the best way to handle her new-found knowledge. Marcelo appears to be genuine in his offer to help, but she loves her child so fiercely that she is unable to trust anyone. It would be much easier, though, to unravel the mystery if she had an unbiased opinion. She desperately needs someone to talk to. If only her mother were alive; she always knew the right words to say. What about her father? Maybe, but he is in Italy, preparing for his marriage to a lady she has never met. Just when Ellen thinks things can’t get any worse, they take a dramatic downturn. And as she unravels the whole, sordid story, she puts herself in jeopardy with every step she takes. Once she knows the truth, she may be sorry she ever started on her quest.

Lisa Scottoline has penned her best novel to date. It will have people talking about what they would do if they were involved in a similar scenario. The answer will not come easily. Emotionally gut-wrenching, ethically divisive and a downright thrilling read, LOOK AGAIN will take its readers on a roller coaster of feelings.
