Winter Reading 2021

At Bookreporter.com, we kicked off 2021 with our seventh annual Winter Reading Contests and Feature. We hosted a series of 24-hour contests spotlighting a book releasing this winter and gave five lucky readers a chance to win it.

Even though our contests have wrapped up, we encourage you to take a look at this year's featured titles, as these are the books you'll want to read during the winter months --- and into the warmer ones!

Cherie Jones, author of How the One-Armed Sister Sweeps Her House

In Baxter’s Beach, Barbados, Lala’s grandmother Wilma tells the story of the one-armed sister. It’s a cautionary tale, about what happens to girls who disobey their mothers and go into the Baxter’s Tunnels. When she’s grown, Lala lives on the beach with her husband, Adan, a petty criminal with endless charisma whose thwarted burglary of one of the beach mansions sets off a chain of events with terrible consequences. A gunshot no one was meant to witness. A new mother whose baby is found lifeless on the beach. A woman torn between two worlds and incapacitated by grief. And two men driven into the Tunnels by desperation and greed who attempt a crime that will risk their freedom --- and their lives.

Week of October 11, 2021

Paperback releases for the week of October 11th include HOW THE ONE-ARMED SISTER SWEEPS HER HOUSE by Cherie Jones, a powerful story about four people each desperate to escape their legacy of violence in a so-called "paradise"; THE ZEALOT AND THE EMANCIPATOR, H. W. Brands' page-turning account of the epic struggle over slavery as embodied by John Brown and Abraham Lincoln --- two men moved to radically different acts to confront our nation’s gravest sin; Vendela Vida's WE RUN THE TIDES, an achingly beautiful story of female friendship, betrayal and a mysterious disappearance set in the changing landscape of San Francisco; and DARK HORSES by Susan Mihalic, a darkly gripping debut novel about a teenage girl’s fierce struggle to reclaim her life from her abusive father, in the vein of MY ABSOLUTE DARLING and ROOM.
