Highschool of the Dead, Vol. 5

Things are getting more and more complicated in the worst way in the Zombie Apocalypse manga Highschool of the Dead, by the Sato Brothers, Daisuke and Shouji.

The team of students led by Takashi has taken shelter temporarily at a local shopping mall. It’s well-stocked with supplies, but houses another band of survivors, some of whom are not so friendly and extremely possessive of the resources they now “own.” What makes matters worse is that Asami, the policewoman in charge, is having…difficulties controlling her “charges.”

With swarms and hordes of “them” lurking outside, and tensions super-high inside, it seems only a matter of time before things break down. A medical emergency sends the group to a clinic to get supplies, but along the way, they suffer their first casualty. Takashi and Kouta take it hard, as would anyone who had to kill a comrade to prevent him from becoming one of “them.” Now, Rei, Saeko and Saya must do their best to protect Takashi and Kouta’s sanity.

When affairs seem to be leveling, everything falls apart when Asami’s senior officer appears as an undead. They realize nobody is coming to help and begin to panic. This is only another example of how fragile and brittle tranquility can be during a zombie apocalypse.

Daisuke and Shouji Sato have truly outdone themselves and continue to do so in their creation of a world without much hope, where only insanity and violence live. This manga is surely not for everyone, certainly not for the faint of heart. I’m not only referring to the massive bloodshed, but also the misery-inducing grimness of the content. It is hard not to read this excellent piece of work without feeling something, most likely bad. Just warning you.
