Week of July 3, 2023

Paperback releases for the week of July 3rd include FREEDOM, an intricately crafted and thought-provoking book from Sebastian Junger, who examines the tension that lies at the heart of what it means to be human; RAISING LAZARUS, Beth Macy's account of everyday heroes fighting on the front lines of the overdose crisis, which is by turns harrowing and heartening, infuriating and inspiring; THE DISPLACEMENTS by Bruce Holsinger, an adrenaline-fueled story of lives upended and transformed by an unprecedented catastrophe; David Joy's WHEN THESE MOUNTAINS BURN, a fierce and tender tale of a father, an addict, a lawman and the explosive events that come to unite them; and the paperback original HER, TOO, an addictively readable thriller from Bonnie Kistler, in which a high-powered lawyer learns firsthand the terrible truth about her client, who is an accused rapist --- a discovery that propels her on a quest for justice and revenge.

Bonnie Kistler, author of Her, Too

Kelly McCann is a high-powered lawyer whose specialty is defending men accused of sex crimes. Her detractors call her a traitor to her gender, but she doesn't care. As the story opens, she has secured an acquittal for a renowned scientist accused of sexually assaulting his female employees. But the thrill of her victory is short-lived. That very night, she, too, falls victim to a brutal sexual assault. And almost as horrific as the attack is the fact that she can't tell anyone it happened --- not without destroying her career in the process. Joining forces with her rapist's other victims, the shrewd lawyer plans to turn the tables on him. It’s not only about justice --- these wronged women are out for revenge. But someone, it seems, is out for them. And one by one, they find themselves facing even greater danger.

Her, Too by Bonnie Kistler

July 2023

In HER, TOO, just as she did in THE CAGE, Bonnie Kistler puts the action right up front. Kelly McCann is a fighter. She defends men who are accused of sex crimes, and she has a winning record. While it feels like she is a traitor to women, this role has made her very successful. She commands a large salary. She has a lot at home to protect, so she needs the money. But then, on the night of one of her biggest victories, she is sexually assaulted. From there, the tables are turned. The way that she was so proactive about her defense is how she is when she joins with other victims to get revenge.
