Fat Vampire: A Never Coming of Age Story

Vampires. The simple word ignites feelings of wonder, awe, mystery and intrigue. Vampires are elegant, classy, noble and even sexy. Then there is Doug Lee. After being attacked by a desperate vampire, Doug has come to the realization that he will never grow old or change. He’ll always remain short and a little bit pudgy. A fat vampire. So he sticks close to what he knows. He and his best friend, Jay, spend their time debating the merits of comic books, superheroes and the fact that Doug sucks blood from cows, not humans. Doug would love to capture the attention of any high school girl, especially the new Indian exchange student, Sejal, but he’s a nerd, and it looks like he’ll be one forever --- literally.

Sejal decided to escape from India in an attempt to become a new and better person. She had “the Google,” a disease in which an individual spends so much time online that real human interaction ceases to exist. She reached her breaking point when she sat in front of her webcam for hours waiting for her life to happen so she could capture it. Now in America, Sejal is determined to be stronger. She quickly integrates with her exchange family, the Browns, and becomes fast friends with their daughter, Cat, who introduces her to all thinks Goth, especially Cat’s favorite show, “Vampire Hunters.”

Alan Friendly has made it his business to entertain people, and he certainly captured vampire fever with his popular program “Vampire Hunters.” The only problem: vampires don’t exist. After reaching record-breaking ratings from being spoofed on “Saturday Night Live,” Alan has seen his stock plummet. With the threat of cancelation looming over his head, he has just stumbled upon his biggest lead that might save the show --- Doug Lee. Armed with stake-firing guns, Alan is determined to hunt a REAL vampire for a change.

Doug, meanwhile, has slowly begun to gain confidence after entering into a mentoring program with a more experienced vampire, Stephin. He finally gets a girlfriend and the chance to drink human blood, and even uses his stealthy vampire powers to foil an attempted robbery at a local convenience store. People are also starting to notice the changes in Doug, especially Sejal, who suspects there is more to Doug than she first realized. With “Vampire Hunters” hot on his trail and all the suspicion surrounding his new persona, Doug might just do the unthinkable to be human again --- if it’s even possible.

Adam Rex has brought a breath of fresh air to all things vampire. Gone are the dreadfully serious and heart-wrenching romantic vampires. Instead, he brings a hilarious vampire that is living anyone’s worst nightmare: eternal adolescence. With a unique storyline that captures many facets of pop culture, FAT VAMPIRE is a funny and welcome addition to the volumes of vampire lore.
