End Game

Will Robie is an assassin, but he’s one of the good guys. The people he kills would do far more harm if he wasn’t there to take them out. Robie works for an organization vaguely referred to as the Agency. He often partners with an equally deadly sniper, Jessica Reel. But after their last job together in his hometown six months ago, she has dropped off his radar. He has just completed an assignment in London and returns to DC. There, he finds a note from Reel. The message is short and confusing: It’s complicated. I’m sorry. JR.

Robie barely has time to think about what it means before he is contacted by someone about their boss, Blue Man. It seems that Blue Man went out to Colorado for a break, as he sometimes does --- a relaxing vacation in a town called Grand, actually Blue Man’s hometown, tiny and remote. There are lots of wide-open spaces out there where a man can unwind, fish and hunt --- pretty much whatever he wants. The downside is that there are also lots of wide-open spaces for a man to go missing. And now Blue Man has gone missing.

"In true David Baldacci form, END GAME starts with a bang and continues at a relentless pace to the very last page. Each chapter ends with a gritty cliffhanger. Putting the book down is simply not possible."

The Agency sends Robie and Reel to Grand to figure out what happened to him. As much as they want him back, they’re afraid they’re not cut out for the task. After all, they’re not detectives. Where would they even start? But their protests fall on deaf ears. Their new mission is simple: Find Blue Man. Well, it may not be exactly simple. The locals are aware of everything that happens in Grand, Colorado. And they look upon outsiders with a suspicious eye. Everyone in town seems to have run across Blue Man --- or Roger Walton, as they know him. But not one person has any idea where Walton disappeared to nor any suggestions of which way to go looking.

Even though the local sheriff acts as though she wants to help, Robie and Reel can’t be sure of her true motives. Small towns have highly effective grapevines. News travels faster than the speed of sound. The residents of Grand, while appearing to have their own agendas, tend to keep a watchful eye on the newcomers. Conducting an investigation in this town turns out to be tricky at best, and keeps growing more and more dangerous. How is it that every move they make seems to be tracked? It’s almost as though someone is forever one step ahead of them. Wherever they go, someone is tailing them --- and usually shooting at them.

Not that they can’t take care of themselves. Robie and Reel are two of the most capable types you’ll ever meet. It’s a good thing, too, because the vast land around Grand is crawling with splinter groups --- skinheads, white supremacists, anarchists, and obscure cults you’ve never heard of, not to mention doomsday silos for the rich. Is one of these harboring a kidnapper? Or could Blue Man simply have taken a tumble while out fishing one day? Robie and Reel have their own opinions about that, and they’re pretty certain the explanation is not an innocent one.

In true David Baldacci form, END GAME starts with a bang and continues at a relentless pace to the very last page. Each chapter ends with a gritty cliffhanger. Putting the book down is simply not possible. This series is action-filled and highly satisfying, with two uniquely skilled characters trained to fight to the death. Will Robie and Jessica Reel are a lethal pair, yes, but they are also a man and a woman who readers can’t help but hope will strike up a romance. The jury is still out on that, but maybe, just maybe, by the end of this mission…who knows? With Baldacci, anything can happen.
