Driven by Eternity: Making Your Life Count Today & Forever
John Bevere, bestselling author of THE BAIT OF SATAN, is back with a compelling look at what it means to truly live a life that counts. Many people today are building their lives on temporal things, including cultural thinking, emotional feelings, tradition and assumptions of who God is rather than basing their beliefs on the eternal truths of God’s word. Bevere argues that these people have been deceived and will face certain judgment for the laws of God that they have overlooked, ignored or chosen to disobey.
He believes that though these individuals live without heaven on their minds, eternity is still planted in their hearts. Bevere writes, “There are going to be many who will be shocked when they stand before Jesus Christ at the judgment. The greatest number of these will not be unbelievers, but rather professing Christians! Yes, they will be those who took security in a part of what the New Testament teaches but neglected to carefully search out the entire picture.”
To explore this idea, Bevere creates a well-written allegory of different types of believers and their experiences in a great kingdom named Affabel. He tells the story of five people who live in this land: Independent, Deceived, Faint Heart, Selfish and Charity. Chapters tell of their exploits, accomplishments and failings as well as how they are judged when they meet the king of Affabel, known as King Jalyn. Throughout the book, Bevere refers back to this allegory as an effective way to communicate the message he’s trying to drive home with readers. The result is an engaging read that piques the interest of those who love fiction and yet still manages to deliver a solid teaching.
Bevere doesn’t shy away from the topics of sin, judgment, hell and salvation. He laces his writing with mentions of visions, dreams and other encounters that would be classified as charismatic among some groups of Christians. He tackles touchy topics head-on and revisits many of the themes of his previous books, including unforgiveness, fear of God and falling away from God. He makes it clear that there is a dividing line. When you die, you will go to one of two places: tremendous joy or horrific judgment. It’s a sobering message. Yet he finishes the book by instilling the hope of heaven in readers’ hearts.
Bevere writes: “We determine how we will build, and we have two major choices in our constructing every moment of our life. One is to gravitate toward the temporal, that which appeases the flesh (wood, grass, or straw). The other is to live in line with our born-again spirit’s desire, the eternal Word of God (gold, silver, and precious stone). How we build, or how we live our lives, will determine how we fair when the fire of His presence examines our work.”
DRIVEN BY ETERNITY tackles the notion that it really doesn’t matter how you live or what you do once you’ve become a Christian and turns it on its head. Bevere reminds readers that once you make a decision to follow Jesus, everything matters --- even more. Reading this book definitely will challenge your thinking and hopefully even the way you live.
