Joe Heller is sent to investigate a murder that was committed at McMurdo Station, an American outpost situated in Antarctica where various groups conduct experiments that rely on the extreme cold of such a desolate place. Heller, a retired police detective, doesn't have much interest in being out in the Arctic cold. But since his divorce from his wife, and an unfortunate incident with his former police partner, he looks at the job offer as an opportunity to get away from his regular (boring) life and do something different.

And things are certainly different at McMurdo Station. All 157 of its employees are pretty much isolated from the rest of the world and are dependent upon each other for survival. Now one of them is dead, and another is a murderer. Heller has to figure out who the culprit is, but before he can do that, two more people are killed, and communication to the outside world is completely cut off, making those in the station think they are alone in the world. How will this affect the rest of the crew at McMurdo Station, and how can Heller solve the murder mystery before anyone else winds up dead?

DAYS OF NIGHT is one of the most intriguing murder mysteries I have ever read. The isolation of the residents in Antarctica heightens the drama as it is impossible for someone to either come or go without notice. Also, because of the timing of the murders, Heller must stay during the winter, when the entire station is plunged into total darkness for six months, creating a unique atmosphere for such a story.

Author Jonathan Stone does a fine job of keeping the action going, with mostly short chapters and lively writing. He throws in enough twists and turns to satisfy any mystery buff, and augments the text with interesting facts and information about various topics related to the plot.
