Brotherhood in Death
BROTHERHOOD IN DEATH, the 42nd book in the In Death series by J. D. Robb (aka Nora Roberts), is a romantic futuristic thriller. It’s a well-paced, gripping story that kept this reviewer up until the wee hours.
The story takes place in the mid-21st century and centers on the police detective heroine Lt. Eve Dallas. When Edward Mira, a former senator, judge and lawyer, goes missing, Eve and her cohorts are called in. The wonderful character of Dennis Mira, husband of the NYPSD’s top profiler, goes to meet his cousin, Edward, at their deceased grandfather’s grand SoHo brownstone and arrives to find him injured. The next thing Dennis knows, it’s lights out. When he comes to, there’s no trace of Edward.
"J. D. Robb has done a top-notch job of keeping this series compelling and intriguing. As always, injustice moves Eve to action, and the long-standing romance between Eve and her husband remains fresh and alive."
Eve and her team are on the job. Has Edward been kidnapped? Or worse? Could someone with a grudge from his past have orchestrated this event? Eve calls on all her resources, including her billionaire husband, Roarke. They soon discover that Edward engaged in numerous liaisons with young women. The team sets out to talk with the most recent of them in hopes of finding any kind of clue as to his whereabouts. But questions remain about who would risk their position or reputation over this man.
Then Edward turns up dead, murdered in an ugly way, and the case takes on a new dimension. When more men are killed in a similar fashion, Eve and the NYPSD dig deeper into the pasts of the victims. Is there a connection between them? The investigation reveals a dark and sordid secret that takes the case on a twisted trail.
Eve is a driven detective in search of the truth at all costs. What she finds will remind her of her own past and suffering. As she well knows, depravity comes in all sizes and shapes and spares no one, regardless of wealth or prestige. Her job is never an easy one, but her sense of justice must prevail.
J. D. Robb has done a top-notch job of keeping this series compelling and intriguing. As always, injustice moves Eve to action, and the long-standing romance between Eve and her husband remains fresh and alive. There are wacky situations and unique plot twists, and characters we have come to know and look forward to meeting again. In short, BROTHERHOOD IN DEATH has everything readers love about a J. D. Robb novel.
