Anything for You

It’s a hot night in San Francisco. On the floor of his bedroom in the upscale neighborhood of Pacific Heights, prosecutor Adam Grant lies dead. His wife, wounded and bleeding, dials 911. Fortunately, their daughter spent the night at a sleepover. It’s a small blessing.

Homicide detective Valerie Hart sweeps in to handle the investigation, despite many reasons she should not. For one, she knew the victim, in ways some people may not think appropriate. And as she gets deeper into the case, the lines between her professional and personal lives become fuzzy.

Valerie’s marriage has had its ups and downs, much of the downside due to her bungling of it. In reality, at times it seems that she pushes her husband, Nick, just to see how far she can go. To see how much she can get away with and still not lose him. Nick has an incredible tolerance --- and love --- for his wife. In fact, to prove it, he suggests that they step things up by starting a family. Valerie agrees, but is her heart really in it? No question, a child would radically change their lives. Is she willing to go that far? Does she love Nick enough? For now, she tables her decision and throws herself into her work.

"The pacing of Saul Black’s ANYTHING FOR YOU will have you absolutely soaring right through it. One surprising twist after another will keep your head spinning."

Finding Adam’s killer --- and his wife’s attacker --- becomes all-consuming. The possible suspect list is long, considering his job. But ultimately the clues lead the police in a wholly unexpected direction. A name pops up. Sophia. And photographs of a sexy blonde woman. These appear to connect Adam to another homicide victim. But how? And why? None of this makes sense. Of course, the more they dig, the clearer things become. Still, even knowing who did it, catching their killer will be trickier than ever.

It all comes back to Sophia. Blonde, beautiful Sophia. Where did the woman come from, and how does she figure into Adam’s murder? Looking into her life story, it explains a lot. A person can see how devastating mistreatment is to a young woman. Growing up is a time of innocence, of shaping your worldview, of learning how life goes. Betrayal is beyond devastating at that stage. It’s crushing. Lack of trust will likely lead to desperate measures, especially when coupled with a feeling of having nowhere to turn. Survival instincts will kick in. Sophia’s early years molded the person she grew up to be, for better or for worse. Prostitution became the least of her worries after what she suffered through. She’s tough and cunning. And she will do anything for the person she cares most about.

The pacing of Saul Black’s ANYTHING FOR YOU will have you absolutely soaring right through it. One surprising twist after another will keep your head spinning. You’ll walk alongside Valerie as she agonizes over her future and bemoans her past. Valerie is a tortured soul; she needs guidance to steer her on the right path. Will she find it? See if you agree with her decision --- rather, decisions --- at the end.
