Adapted from one of the most influential pieces of literature of all time, ANNE FRANK’S DIARY: The Graphic Adaption is a graphic novel version of Anne Frank’s THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL. While the graphic novel version of the diary has been published before, the Anne Frank Foundation has republished a new version to target a new audience of readers to her story. The new version of this story has been adapted by Ari Folman and illustrated by David Polonsky. This real-life story takes place from June 1942 to August 1944, where we follow Anne Frank and her family and their experience during the tragic events of the Holocaust and World War ll.

I was genuinely surprised and blow away from this graphic novel! I have never read THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL and didn’t know much of Anne Frank’s story, so I went into this pretty clueless. Anne Frank completely caught me off guard; while she starts off clueless of the world around when she first starts writing in her diary, she becomes an intelligent, caring 15-year-old girl as time passes by. She is a talented writer; by the time you get to the end of the graphic novel, you can see a complete change in her writing and in her as a person. I found myself becoming attached to her as she started becoming more self-aware of her own actions.

ANNE FRANK’S DIARY is one of the best graphic novels I have ever read; not only is it a beautifully written and compelling story, but the art in the graphic novel is also beautiful. I tend to be a little picky about the art style used in graphic novels, so I was glad that I wasn’t disappointed by the art used in this one. It is colorful, bright and creative. Some of the pages in this graphic novel are amazing and things I have never seen done before in a graphic novel. In one of the pages, the illustrator, David Polonsky, creates a contrast between Anne Frank and her sister by showing how they both react to certain situations, which gives us a stronger understanding between their dynamic. This is just an example of one of the many beautiful illustrations used throughout this graphic novel.

Now, while this is an amazing graphic novel, it doesn’t cover everything about Anne Frank’s diary. However, I do think that this is an amazing way of getting people to learn about Anne Frank. After reading this graphic novel, I have the need to read THE DIARY OF A YOUNG GIRL, and I think many will feel the same way after reading the graphic novel.

Overall, ANNE FRANK’S DIARY is something I would recommend to everyone without hesitation; it’s one of those books where I think just about everyone would enjoy or at least get something out of it. ANNE FRANK’S DIARY is a great graphic novel that everyone should read, and will definitely introduce a new audience to her story.
