All the Rage: A D.I. Adam Fawley Thriller
British author Cara Hunter has enjoyed years of success in her home country. She is best known for her thriller series featuring DI Adam Fawley, and the latest installment available in the US is ALL THE RAGE.
The Prologue is perhaps the most chilling part of the novel as it places readers directly within the mindset of both the victim and the predator at large. With skin-crawling detail, Hunter shows the assailant carefully laying out each characteristic of his intended target prior to attacking her. We then watch as teenager Faith Appleford prepares for a night out with her girlfriends, the entire time being in the crosshairs of her would-be abductor.
"Cara Hunter knows how to build suspense and take readers firmly inside the inner workings of a criminal case, which pairs nicely with her unique way of storytelling."
Next, we spend time within the nerve center of Fawley’s team when they learn that a young lady has been found abandoned on the side of the road. They hope it’s Faith, who her family had reported missing. Eventually they uncover a huge secret involving the teen that could change the entire direction of their case.
Faith cannot tell them much about her captor other than that he was male and may not have been acting alone. What transpires from here is a brand of police procedural that has become a signature for Hunter. Much like her prior novel, the stand-alone thriller MURDER IN THE FAMILY, she makes detailed use of various forms of communication to depict crime-solving techniques. This includes, but is not limited to, emails, social media, text messages and articles from local journalists.
For Fawley, what makes Faith’s situation so déjà vu is how closely it resembles the Roadside Rapist case from 1998, where a monster named Gavin Parrie abducted and raped as many as six young women. Parrie is now up for parole and has always maintained his innocence. When another girl goes missing, it forces Fawley to take a deep dive into his own past. What he and his team uncover may be completely unexpected.
