New York, New York: A Helluva Baseball Town

A lot of New Yorkers think the world revolves around their city. When it comes to baseball books, that’s probably true. More words have been written about their teams than all others combined, and fans can usually count on a number of titles about the Yankees and Mets (with an occasional nod to the Dodgers and Giants of long ago).

This year offers a bonus as we mark the 50th(!) anniversary of the Miracle Mets’ improbable first World Championship.

Week of March 16, 2020

Paperback releases for the week of March 16th include THE PARADE by Dave Eggers, a taut, suspenseful story of two foreigners' role in a nation's fragile peace; UNTO US A SON IS GIVEN, the 28th entry in Donna Leon's mystery series featuring her soulful detective, Commissario Guido Brunetti; Kristin Harmel's THE WINEMAKER'S WIFE, a moving story set amid the champagne vineyards of France during the darkest days of World War II; THE OTHER AMERICANS by Laila Lalami, a timely and powerful novel about the suspicious death of a Moroccan immigrant that is at once a family saga, a murder mystery and a love story, all of it informed by the treacherous fault lines of American culture; and AFTER THE MIRACLE, the inside account of the 1969 New York Mets --- a last-place team that turned it all around in just one season --- told by ’69 Mets outfielder Art Shamsky, Hall of Fame pitcher Tom Seaver and other teammates who reminisce about that legendary season and their enduring bonds decades later.
