A Match Made in Heaven: American Jews, Christian Zionists, and One Man’s Exploration of the Weird and Wonderful Judeo-Evangelical Alliance
After a year of exploring the relationship between Evangelical Christians and Jews, Zev Chafets came to the conclusion that the coalition offered by evangelicals is not only one that Israel depends upon, but it is a wartime alliance that Jews would be crazy to refuse. In his new book, A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN: American Jews, Christian Zionists, and One Man’s Exploration of the Weird and Wonderful Judeo-Evangelical Alliance (HarperCollins, January 2007), Chafets dispels the myth that Evangelical Christians have an ulterior motive in their support of Israel and argues that the Jews of America should support such an important and historic alliance.
In Chafets’ opinion, the smartest thing the Jews can do is to stop fighting the Christians of America as though they were the enemy and instead embrace them as allies. “Much to the surprise of most Jews, Evangelical Christians are their best friends in a world where they don’t have many friends.”
As the conflict in the Middle East continues and divisions harden, American Christians are opening their arms and their checkbooks in support of Israel—perhaps even more so than American Jews. In A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN, Chafets examines this ever-changing relationship between Evangelical Christians and Jews. On the way, he reports on everything from the Galilee grocery store at the End of the World and Jerry Falwell’s collegiate debate squad to Pat Robertson’s Virginia command center, the Jewish chapel at West Point and Republican Jews.
In a recent L.A. Times interview, Chafets quipped, “…the evangelicals’ ideology has made them into militant anti-fascists (which is more than I can say for some of my best friends). The truth is, in this war, I’d rather be in a bomb shelter—or a foxhole—with Jerry Falwell than with Jerry Seinfeld.”
An anecdotal and engaging look at a pressing issue, Zev Chafets’ A MATCH MADE IN HEAVEN makes the case for the importance of a Judeo-Christian alliance.
