San Diego Comic Con is finally here. Excited? You should be. This is the big one, folks --- where comics disciples of all sorts come from far and wide to beautiful southern California to see the inside of the industry they love, gawk at their favorite writers and illustrators, and hobnob with the latest Doctor Who actor the CW hired to put on one of its seemingly countless DC-inspired teledramas. Conventions can be a bit daunting for first timers, especially for librarians and educators, but here at Graphic Novel Reporter, we believe in making things easy. To that end, we've included a list of all the librarian- and educator-oriented programming at this year's SDCC below. Have a look, and enjoy the show:

Interview: John Gilstrap, author of Against All Enemies: A Jonathan Grave Thriller

Jul 1, 2015

John Gilstrap’s novels read like blockbuster movies, sort of a cross between Midnight Express and Black Hawk Down. Sure enough, he has signed contracts for three screenplays (more details here.) Gilstrap --- whose latest book, AGAINST ALL ENEMIES, is his seventh thriller featuring hostage rescue specialist Jonathan Grave --- chats with Bookreporter.com’s Dean Murphy about the psyche of his protagonist, the craft of writing, his life as an author, and the power of the written word.

Teen Board member Alison S. has been tackling the classics for a while now, blogging about the literary merits, nuances and modern relevance of SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES, FRANKENSTEIN, THE HITCHHIKER'S GUIDE TO THE GALAXY and THE PORTRAIT OF DORIAN GRAY. In this "sub-blog series," though, she's going to dig into one of the great controversies of modern literature --- the fact that Sir Conan Doyle killed off Sherlock Holmes only to bring him back seven years later "for no ostensible reason." In this post, she looks at the the first novel in which Holmes mystically reappears --- THE HOUND OF THE BASKERVILLES --- and in future posts, will talk about the different theories behind Doyle's mysterious choice.
