To call Nick Lake's IN DARKNESS a book for young people is to do it a disservice. Certainly it should be read by anyone who would benefit from a richer understanding of the troubled country of Haiti. But, after all, couldn't that apply to the vast majority of Americans today, regardless of their age? When most of us saw a Haiti torn apart by earthquake devastation in January 2010, those television pictures were likely the first scenes we had seen of Haiti in years, the first time we had thought of it in months. About the Book
"Shorty" is a Haitian boy trapped in the ruins of a hospital when the earth explodes around him. Surrounded by lifeless bodies and growing desperately weak from lack of food and water, death seems imminent. Yet as Shorty waits in darkness for a rescue that may never come, he becomes aware of another presence, one reaching out to him across 200 years of history. It is the presence of slave and revolutionary leader Toussaint L'Ouverture, whose life was marred by violence, and whose own end came in darkness. What unites a child of the slums with the man who would shake a troubled country out of slavery? Is it the darkness they share...or is it hope?

LITTLE WOMEN. Almost everybody has an association with those two words. That title is recognized as the American classic by Louisa May Alcott, and reading the book is a rite of passage for millions of Americans. The story of four sisters growing up during the Civil War in beautiful New England has a resonance that casts its glow over many generations of readers. But what would you change if you ever had the chance to write your own version of the book? I can’t say that I would change anything (except for Meg to be a little more adventurous). Read More

About the Book
Emily is sick and tired of being a middle sister. So when she gets an assignment to describe what she'd change about a classic novel, Emily pounces on LITTLE WOMEN. After all, if she can't change things in her own family, maybe she can bring a little justice to the March sisters. (Kill off Beth? Have cute Laurie wind up with Amy instead of Jo? What was Louisa May Alcott thinking?!) But when Emily gets mysteriously transported into the 1860s world of the book, she discovers that righting fictional wrongs won't be easy. And after being immersed in a time and place so different from her own, it may be Emily --- not the four March sisters --- who undergoes the most surprising change of all. Lauren Baratz-Logsted's winning confection will appeal to fans of LITTLE WOMEN as well as anyone who enjoys a modern twist on an old favorite.
