THY NEIGHBOR is the first work of fiction by journalist Norah Vincent, a stream-of conscience narrative that skirts the edges of genre novels without giving itself over wholeheartedly to, say, the mystery and thriller categories. Reading it will put one in the mind of such books as J.D. Salinger’s THE CATCHER IN THE RYE, William Burroughs’ NAKED LUNCH, or even Norman Mailer’s WHY ARE WE IN VIETNAM?, all for varied and not immediately obvious reasons. Read More

About the Book
At 34, Nick Walsh is a broken, deeply cynical man. Since the violent deaths of his parents thirteen years earlier, he has been living alone in his childhood home in the suburban Midwest, drinking, drugging, and debauching himself into oblivion. A measure of solace is provided by his newly found relationship with Monica, a mysterious woman who seems to harbor as many secrets as he does.
Obsessed with understanding the circumstances surrounding his parents’ deaths and deranged by his relentless sorrow, Nick begins a campaign of spying on his neighbors via hidden cameras and microphones he has covertly installed in their houses. As he observes with amusement and disbelief all the strange, sad, and terrifying things that his neighbors do to themselves and to one another, and as he, in turn, learns that he is being stalked, he begins to slowly unravel the shocking truth about how and why his parents died.
At once unsettling and moving, humorous and horrifying, THY NEIGHBOR explores the nature of grief, the potential isolation of suburban life, and who we really are when we think no one is watching. What readers and critics have admired in Norah Vincent’s nonfiction is completely unleashed in this vivid and provocative novel.

Dave Zeltserman is an eclectic author who has received his rightful critical acclaim, but who is arguably underappreciated commercially. He has written such diverse novels as the dark, rural gothic THE CARETAKER OF LORNE FIELDS and highly praised crime noir novels like OUTSOURCED and PARIAH. MONSTER, his latest work, is an unanticipated left turn, even for him. Read More

About the Book
The supernatural, unmissable new novel by the ALA Best Horror award nominee. In nineteenth-century Germany, one young man counts down the days until he can marry his beloved...until she is found brutally murdered, and the young man is accused of the crime. Broken on the wheel and left for dead, he awakens on a lab table, transformed into an abomination. Friedrich must go far to take his revenge --- only to find his tormentor, Victor Frankenstein, in league with the Marquis de Sade, creating something much more sinister deep in the mountains. Paranormal and gripping in the tradition of the best work of Stephen King and Justin Cronin, MONSTER is a gruesome parable of control and vengeance, and an ingenious tribute to one of literature's greatest.

About the Book
Elizabeth Adler delivers an emotionally powerful novel about mothers and daughters, the secrets we share, and those we keep to ourselves.
Fifteen-year-old Issy, and her newly-single mother, Caroline Evans, are struggling to find their way alone, as well as together. At 38, Caroline is coming to terms with this new life, even though she has little money and all the responsibility for the two of them. When she decides to leave their well-off lives in Singapore (and her cheating husband and his long-time mistress and powerhouse), she ends up living in an English village pub, cooking dinners to earn enough to get by on; meeting unexpectedly quirky people, and making friends. But Issy still adores her father and secretly blames her mother for their change in life. When Caroline’s dream of restoring an old barn into a restaurant finally begins to come true, her chance at happiness hangs in the balance as whispers of murder and vengeance find their way to her. When Issy, hovering in that limbo between girl and young woman, begins to make some dangerous choices, the stakes are raised even higher.
A PLACE IN THE COUNTRY is filled with emotions that every woman will recognize as Caroline and Issy make their way in the world and do battle with those who would wish to see them lose their chances to gain their hearts’ desires. Love and hate, blame and responsibility, deception and trust all collide in this novel that is Elizabeth Adler at her page-turning best.

Imagine being chased --- hunted --- through a city you have made your own in a country not of your birth where you have a working familiarity with the language and the culture but don’t understand all of it. Then imagine that you are being hunted by the police at the behest of an individual of such demeanor (or aura, if you will) that he can suck the air out of a room --- or even out of the whole building --- by the simple act of walking through a doorway. THE CRIME OF JULIAN WELLS is one of those great books that readers don’t want to talk about too much for fear of divulging more than they should, thereby spoiling the surprises and wonders therein. Though not a large book by any means (under 300 pages), it must be read slowly, with resistance given to the urge to move ever forward and quickly to see what happens next. Every word and scene counts in some way, so that by the time readers reach the conclusion, curiosity will be piqued and other books and sources will be sought out. It’s that type of book. Read More

About the Book
With THE CRIME OF JULIAN WELLS, Thomas H. Cook, one of America's most acclaimed suspense writers, has written a novel in the grand tradition of the twisty, cerebral thriller. Like Eric Ambler's A COFFIN FOR DIMITRIOS and Graham Greene's THE THIRD MAN, it is a mystery of identity, or assumed identity, a journey into the maze of a mysterious life.
When famed true-crime writer Julian Wells' body if found in a boat drifting on a Montauk pond, the question is not how he died, but why?
The death is obviously a suicide. But why would Julian Wells have taken his own life? And was this his only crime? These are the questions that first intrigue and then obsess Philip Anders, Wells' best friend and the chief defender of both his moral and his literary legacies.
Anders' increasingly passionate and dangerous quest to answer these questions becomes a journey into a haunted life, one marked by travel, learning, achievement and adventure, a life that should have been celebrated, but whose lonely end points to terrors still unknown.
Spanning four decades and traversing three continents, THE CRIME OF JULIAN WELLS is a journey into one man's heart of darkness than ends in a blaze of light.

How nice it is to read BLIND GODDESS by Anne Holt. American audiences have been favored with an erratic and somewhat out-of-sequence trickle of the Hanne Wilhelmsen series for a myriad number of reasons. This is the very first installment in the series, originally published in the author’s native Norway in 1993. It is somewhat disconcerting --- for me, at least --- to realize that 1993 was almost 20 years ago, a time when most of the population did not have an email address, cellular phones were an exception rather than a rule, and few people knew what “CSI” meant. About the Book
A small-time drug dealer is found battered to death on the outskirts of the Norwegian capital, Oslo. A young Dutchman, walking aimlessly in central Oslo covered in blood, is taken into custody but refuses to talk. When he is informed that the woman who discovered the body, Karen Borg, is a lawyer, he demands her as his defender, although her specialty is civil, not criminal, law. A couple of days later, Hansa Larsen, a lawyer of the shadiest kind, is found shot to death.
Soon police officers Håkon Sand and Hanne Wilhelmsen establish a link between the two killings. They also find a coded message hidden in the murdered lawyer’s apartment. Their maverick colleague in the drugs squad, Billy T., reports that a recent rumor in the drug underworld involves drug-dealing lawyers. Now the reason why the young Dutchman insisted on having Karen Borg as a defender slowly dawns on them: since she was the one to find and report the body, she is the only Oslo lawyer that cannot be implicated in the crime.
As the officers investigate, they uncover a massive network of corruption leading to the highest levels of government. As their lives are threatened, Hanne and her colleagues must find the killer and, in the process, bring the lies and deception out into the open.

WHERE THE BODIES ARE BURIED is a bit of a change of pace for Christopher Brookmyre. Best known for his comedic crime novels --- calling him a Scottish Donald Westlake would be a bit of a stretch, but to some extent it would be accurate --- Brookmyre approaches his book’s subject matter with a much more somber tone than he typically uses.
"[Brookmyre] tends to plow rather fertile fields, and those who pay attention to what is being discussed will find themselves amply rewarded by story’s end."

About the Book
WHERE THE BODIES ARE BURIED is the latest work from Scottish crime writer Christopher Brookmyre, best known for his comic crime novels. His latest book is just as richly Scottish as his earlier work, but it is his grittiest and most realistic novel yet.
When small-time heroin dealer Jai McDiarmid turns up dead one fine Glasgow morning, no one is that surprised --- he'd been sleeping with a drug trafficker's girlfriend and had made himself a lot of enemies --- so many, in fact, that Detective Superintendent Catherine McLeod doesn't know where to start when she is assigned to the case. Meanwhile, out-of-work actress Jasmine Sharp is doing her best to be a private investigator, but her PI mentor Uncle Jim, who was meant to be showing her the ropes, has just disappeared in mysterious circumstances. She begins looking at the open cases that Jim was investigating --- which sends her into trouble, fast. And when she soon finds out that Jim's disappearance has something to do with Jai's death, she teams up with Catherine --- and together they stumble upon an old open case which throws everything into question. In Glasgow, nothing is quite what it seems.
