Stephen Coonts has written some of the most frightening books I have ever read. That’s a tall order for a bestselling author of political and military thrillers, but so it goes. The frightening aspect is that throughout his career, Coonts has shown an uncanny ability to publish novels using the geopolitical situation as his canvas, only to have events taking place some six months to a year later mirror those in his most recent book. This is particularly true of the novels that comprise his Jake Grafton and Tommy Carmellini series. Read More

For those readers who would prefer a nonfiction version of THE PARIS WIFE, this readable narrative might just do the trick. Written by a journalist, children’s author and “cultural historian,” EVERYBODY BEHAVES BADLY chronicles the Hemingways’ life from 1921, when the 21-year-old Hemingway was engaged to Hadley Richardson, through the publication and initial extravagant success of THE SUN ALSO RISES. This book’s title comes from that novel’s protagonist Jake Barnes’ comment that “Everybody behaves badly. Give them the proper chance.” Read More

Alain de Botton's May 29, 2016 op-ed piece in the New York Times, entitled "Why You Will Marry the Wrong Person," inspired a blizzard of reader comments --- 531 in all by the time the response period closed. Not surprisingly, his view that "Choosing whom to commit ourselves to is merely a case of identifying which particular variety of suffering we would most like to sacrifice ourselves for" struck many readers as cynical in the extreme. About the Book

From the award-winning author of NO ONE IS HERE EXCEPT ALL OF US, an imaginative novel about a wealthy New England family in the 1960s and '70s that suddenly loses its fortune --- and its bearings.

Labor Day, 1976, Martha's Vineyard. Summering at the family beach house along this moneyed coast of New England, Fern and Edgar --- married with three children --- are happily preparing for a family birthday celebration when they learn that the unimaginable has occurred: There is no more money. More specifically, there's no more money in the estate of Fern's recently deceased parents, which, as the sole source of Fern and Edgar's income, had allowed them to live this beautiful, comfortable life despite their professed anti-money ideals. Quickly, the once-charmed family unravels. In distress and confusion, Fern and Edgar are each tempted away on separate adventures: she on a road trip with a stranger, he on an ill-advised sailing voyage with another woman. The three children are left for days with no guardian whatsoever, in an improvised Neverland helmed by the tender, witty and resourceful Cricket, age nine.

Brimming with humanity and wisdom, humor and bite, and imbued with both the whimsical and the profound, SONS AND DAUGHTERS OF EASE AND PLENTY is a story of American wealth, class, family and mobility, approached by award-winner Ramona Ausubel with a breadth of imagination and understanding that is fresh, surprising and exciting.

"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing,” observed Edmund Burke centuries ago. It is an often-quoted observation because the world is reminded of its truth on a regular basis. THE LYNCHING by Laurence Leamer is a fascinating narrative of a moment in history when good people did stand up to racism, bigotry, evil and hatred. Readers of this compelling historical account will find themselves angry at silence and inaction in the face of clear injustice. Read More

About the Book

The New York Times bestselling author of THE KENNEDY WOMEN chronicles the powerful and spellbinding true story of a brutal race-based killing in 1981 and subsequent trials that undid one of the most pernicious organizations in American history --- the Ku Klux Klan.

On a Friday night in March 1981, Henry Hays and James Knowles scoured the streets of Mobile in their car, hunting for a black man. The young men were members of Klavern 900 of the United Klans of America. They were seeking to retaliate after a largely black jury could not reach a verdict in a trial involving a black man accused of the murder of a white man. The two Klansmen found 19-year-old Michael Donald walking home alone. Hays and Knowles abducted him, beat him, cut his throat, and left his body hanging from a tree branch in a racially mixed residential neighborhood.

Arrested, charged and convicted, Hays was sentenced to death --- the first time in more than half a century that the state of Alabama sentenced a white man to death for killing a black man. On behalf of Michael’s grieving mother, Morris Dees, the legendary civil rights lawyer and cofounder of the Southern Poverty Law Center, filed a civil suit against the members of the local Klan unit involved and the UKA, the largest Klan organization. Charging them with conspiracy, Dees put the Klan on trial, resulting in a verdict that would level a deadly blow to its organization.

Based on numerous interviews and extensive archival research, THE LYNCHING brings to life two dramatic trials, during which the Alabama Klan’s motives and philosophy were exposed for the evil they represent. In addition to telling a gripping and consequential story, Laurence Leamer chronicles the KKK and its activities in the second half the 20th century, and illuminates its lingering effect on race relations in America today.

There is a vignette in BRIGHTON that is frozen in my mind. It consists of a momentous meeting in a Boston dive bar, during which conversation of some foreboding importance takes place while “Wonderful Remark” by Van Morrison plays incongruently but nonetheless perfectly in the background. It doesn’t get much better than that, but BRIGHTON --- a stand-alone crime story by veteran grammar-miner Michael Harvey --- is full of scenes like that, wonderfully told and beautifully done. About the Book

An extraordinary thriller --- gripping, haunting and marvelously told --- about two friends growing up in a rapidly changing Boston, who must face the sins of their past in the midst of a series of brutal murders.

“You came back here to bury your past... Thing is, you gotta kill it first.”

Kevin Pearce --- baseball star, honor student, the pride of Brighton --- was 15 when he left town in the back of his uncle’s cab. He and his buddy, Bobby Scales, just committed a heinous act of violence for what they thought were the best of reasons. Kevin didn’t want a pass, but he was getting it anyway. Bobby would stay and face the music; Kevin’s future would remain as bright as ever. At least that was the way things were supposed to work. Except in Brighton, things never work the way they’re supposed to.

Twenty-seven years later, Kevin is a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for the Boston Globe. He’s never been back to his old block, having avoided his family and, especially, Bobby Scales. Then he learns his old friend is the prime suspect in a string of local murders. All of a sudden Kevin’s headed home --- to protect a friend and the secret they share. To report this story to the end and protect those he loves, he must navigate not only an elusive, slippery killer, but his own corrupted conscience.

A powerhouse of a thriller, BRIGHTON is a riveting and elegiac exploration of promises broken, debts owed and old wrongs made right…no matter what the cost.

About the Book

Frank Marr knows crime in Washington, DC. A decorated former police detective, he retired early and now ekes a living as a private eye for a defense attorney. Frank Marr may be the best investigator the city has ever known, but the city doesn't know his dirty secret.

A long-functioning drug addict, Frank has devoted his considerable skills to hiding his usage from others. But after accidentally discovering a kidnapped teenage girl in the home of an Adams Morgan drug gang, Frank becomes a hero and is thrust into the spotlight. He reluctantly agrees to investigate the disappearance of another girl --- possibly connected to the first --- and the heightened scrutiny may bring his own secrets to light, too.

About the Book

As broad as our exponentially growing cultural fascination with caped crusaders is, it runs just as deep as this long awaited anthology underscores. Liesa Mignogna, the VP, Editorial Director at Simon Pulse and editor of this anthology, can expound on the virtues of Batman (her wedding was even Batman-themed) but it's her retelling of incredibly harrowing yet ultimately inspiring encounters with The Dark Knight over the years, as she struggled to coexist with the supervillains in her own family that birthed this collection.

LAST NIGHT, A SUPERHERO SAVED MY LIFE gives readers the chance to connect to their beloved authors, while those same authors connect to their beloved superheroes, and within that feedback loop of respect and admiration lies a stellar, and phenomenally accessible, anthology full of thrills, chills and spills.
