I admit that I was initially drawn to Nickolas Butler’s new novel, THE HEARTS OF MEN, more for its setting than for its premise. It’s not the sort of book I ordinarily read. Steeped in male characters and masculine traditions (like the Boy Scouts), with few female characters, the novel would at first glance seem very far away from my own experience. Read More

Camp Chippewa, 1962. Thirteen-year-old Nelson Doughty, a social outcast and an overachiever, is the Bugler, sounding the reveille proudly each morning. Yet this particular summer marks the beginning of an uncertain and tenuous friendship with a popular boy named Jonathan. Over the years, Nelson, irrevocably scarred from the Vietnam War, becomes Scoutmaster of Camp Chippewa, while Jonathan marries, divorces and turns his father’s business into a highly profitable company. And when something unthinkable happens at a camp get-together with Nelson as Scoutmaster and Jonathan’s teenage grandson and daughter-in-law as campers, the aftermath demonstrates the depths --- and the limits --- of Nelson’s selflessness and bravery.

WHITE TEARS is many things. It begins as the story of a partnership between two young men and ends as a tale of revenge and justice with supernatural elements. What occurs in between is a hallucinatory journey in which the past and present meet and commingle. The resulting work is puzzling in parts, haunting in others, and compulsively readable. Read More

A landmark United States Supreme Court decision to return Nazi Germany’s stolen art treasures to their Jewish heirs made headlines across the world in 2005. That decision was based on the proof of rightful ownership of the famous Lady in Gold portrait by Gustav Klimt to the family of Maria Altmann nearly one century after the painting was created. This amazing story gained more attention through a recent movie of the same name, starring Helen Mirren. Read More

Though they enjoy a life where sex and art are just beginning to break through the façade of conventional society, the city is also exhibiting a disturbing increase in anti-Semitism, as political hatred foments in the shadows of Adele’s coffee house afternoons and cultural salons. Nearly 40 years later, Adele’s niece Maria Altmann is a newlywed when the Nazis invade Austria. When her husband is arrested and her family is forced out of their home, Maria must summon the courage and resilience that is her aunt’s legacy if she is to survive and keep her family --- and their history --- alive.

When her husband is arrested and her family is forced out of their home, Maria must summon the courage and resilience that is her aunt’s legacy if she is to survive and keep her family --- and their history --- alive.
Will Maria and her family escape the grip of Nazis’ grip? And what will become of the paintings that her aunt nearly sacrificed everything for?
Impeccably researched and a “must-read for fans of Kristin Hannah’s THE NIGHTINGALE and Paula McLain’s CIRCLING THE SUN” (Christina Baker Kline, #1 New York Times bestselling author), STOLEN BEAUTY intertwines the tales of two remarkable women across more than 100 years. The reviews I have read of CELINE seem to be across the spectrum. While the novel is not without its flaws, I suspect that part of the reactive unhappiness it has encountered in some quarters is due to preliminary expectations on the part of readers. At its heart, this book is a character study, with elements of a private detective mystery and pretensions of a political thriller. Read More

Matthew Betley quickly earned a spot on my must-read list with the publication of OVERWATCH, his debut novel, in 2016. Betley doesn’t just talk the talk; he has a decade’s worth of experience as a Marine officer in Middle East combat hot spots that lend an air of authenticity --- and much, much more --- to his Logan West and John Quick novels, which chronicle the actions of the pair as members of the United States Joint Terrorism Task Force. This newly published second book fulfills and exceeds the promise implicitly made in its predecessor that this would be a series to watch. Read More

About the Book
Ron Currie’s three previous works of fiction have dazzled readers and critics alike with their originality, audacity and psychological insight. A writer of unique vision and huge imagination, Currie excels at creating complex, troubled yet endearing characters, and his work has won comparison to everyone from Kurt Vonnegut to George Saunders.
K., the narrator of Currie’s new novel, joins the ranks of other great American literary creations who show us something new about ourselves. Like Jack Gladney from WHITE NOISE, K. is possessed of a hyper-articulate exasperation with the world, and like Ignatius J. Reilly in A CONFEDERACY OF DUNCES, he is a doomed truth teller whom everyone misunderstands. After his wife Sarah dies, K.becomes so wedded to the notion of clarity that he infuriates friends and strangers alike. When he intervenes in an armed robbery, K. finds himself both an inadvertent hero and the star of a new reality television program. How Currie’s unconventional hero comes to find peace, to reenter the world, and to be touched again by emotion and empathy makes for a dramatic, utterly memorable story.
