British author Cara Hunter has been an internationally bestselling writer for years, and I have always enjoyed her work. She finally makes her American debut with MURDER IN THE FAMILY. And what a debut it is!
To begin with, I must state that this is far from your traditional mystery novel. It blends both elements of mystery and true crime in a unique storytelling style that consists primarily of newspaper and magazine articles, podcasts and a good deal of coverage from the true crime series “Infamous.” Read More

Guy Howard’s mother and two half-sisters were in the house at the time of the murder, but all swear they saw nothing. Despite a high-profile police investigation and endless media attention, no suspect was ever charged. But some murder cases are simply too big to forget. Now comes the sensational new streaming series “Infamous,” dedicated to investigating --- and perhaps cracking --- this famous cold case. Years later, a group of experts re-examine the evidence on “Infamous” with shocking results. Does the team know more than they’ve been letting on?

What a delightful book! Perhaps I should simply stop at this point and tell you to read John Scalzi’s masterful work of science fiction, which is unlike most of his previous efforts and move on to my next Bookreporter project. But that would not do this enjoyable novel justice and give it appropriate credit. Read More

John Prine hated giving interviews, but he said much when he talked. Embarrassed by fame, delighted by the smallest things, the first songwriter to read at the Library of Congress, and winner of the Pen Award for Literary Excellence, Prine saw the world unlike anyone else. The songs from 1971’s John Prine remain spot-on takes of the human condition today, and his writing only got richer, funnier and more incisive. The interviews in PRINE ON PRINE trace his career evolution, his singular mind, his enduring awareness of social issues, and his acute love of life.

Sometimes a book can be difficult to read. But that book might need to be read over and over again to really experience it fully, discomfort notwithstanding. Read More

About the Book
Inspired by true events, Naomi Ragen's THE ENEMY BESIDE ME is a powerful, provocative novel about two people fighting for reconciliation over unforgivable crimes of the past.
Taking over from her father and grandfather as the head of the Survivor’s Campaign, an organization whose purpose is to bring Nazi war criminals to justice, Milia Gottstein has dedicated her life to making sure the voices of Holocaust victims will never be silenced. It is an overwhelming and heartbreaking mission that has often usurped her time and energy being a wife to busy surgeon Julius, and a mother and grandmother. But now, just as she is finally ready to pass on her work to others, making time for her personal life, an unexpected phone call suddenly explodes all she thought she knew about her present and her future.
In the midst of this personal turmoil, Milia receives an invitation to be the keynote speaker at a Holocaust conference in Lithuania from Dr. Darius Vidas, the free spirited, rebellious conference head. Despite suspecting his motives --- she is, after all, viewed as a "public enemy" in that country for her efforts to have them try war criminals and admit their historic responsibility for annihilating almost their entire Jewish community, including her own family --- she nevertheless accepts, having developed a secret agenda of her own. But as Milia and Darius begin their mission, shared experiences profoundly alter their relationship, replacing antagonism and suspicion with a growing intimacy. However, this only ramps up the hostile forces facing them, threatening their families, livelihoods and reputations, and forcing them into shocking choices that will betray all they have achieved and all that has grown between them.

When Yiyun Li writes anything, it’s going to have some weight to it. Her new collection, WEDNESDAY’S CHILD, is a heavy tome. It’s short fiction that revolves around her favorite subjects: motherhood, aging, alienation and loss. It represents a culling of the wild and wacky circumstances circa 2023 that have taken reign over the everyday thoughts and activities of people. These are days that test every ounce of one’s energy to emerge from each new misadventure, every jolt of news. Read More

Yiyun Li is a truly original writer, an alchemist of opposites: tender and unsentimental, metaphysical and blunt, funny and horrifying, omniscient and unusually aware of just how much we cannot know. Beloved for her novels and memoirs, she returns here to her earliest form, gathering pieces that have appeared in The New Yorker, Zoetrope and elsewhere. Taken together, the stories in WEDNESDAY'S CHILD, written over the span of a decade, articulate the cost, both material and emotional, of living --- exile, assimilation, loss, love --- with her trademark unnerving beauty and wisdom.

We have a coat rack in our back hallway that typically tells a story of the season. But I passed it the other night, and I could see how crazy the weather has been this month. There are four prongs on it, each with a beach towel on them ready for us to grab on the way to the pool. There are two rain slickers. There are two heavier jackets. That is like a portrait of September. I feel like this month blitzed by even faster than July, and that is saying something. Two weekends ago I was sitting by the pool, and yesterday I was wearing long sleeves and a warm jacket. And the rain…so much rain!
