Ring Ring, it's Time for Spring Fling! The last time we spoke, I was just about to dash out the door to head to an author meet and greet featuring Susan Dennard, Erika Lewis, Kim Liggett and Victoria Schwab. As I mentioned, I was absolutely dying to meet Susan Dennard --- and let me tell you, she did not disappoint. In between getting teary about great YA, talking about WINDWITCH and recommending books to each other, we had just enough time to snap one selfie, which you can see above. I also had the chance to speak with author Erika Lewis, whose book, GAME OF SHADOWS, released last month. Erika has one of the most interesting background stories ever: not only did she major in...wait for it...math in college, she also has a long career in television. Of course, I had to ask her to tell me more, and she was happy to explain it all on our blog. Click here to read about her unusual journey to authordom, and check out our photo (and Erika's awesome bomber jacket) above. To cap off the meet and greet, I had the totally out-of-this-world opportunity to have a mini-photo shoot on the Throne of Schwabs, a bookstagram-worthy throne constructed from copies of V.E. Schwab's A CONJURING OF LIGHT. Luckily, I also had the chance to take some pictures of the queen herself before she dashed off to an author event at a local bookstore. You can see photos of Victoria and me on the throne above! This month, we celebrate both Women's History Month and the beginning of spring, and we're kicking off the festivities in some really fun ways. Up first, we're delighted to share our annual Spring Fling contest, which officially starts today! From now until Monday, May 1st at noon ET, you can enter to win one of our five Spring Fling prize packages, which includes one copy of each of our five featured books. Click here or scroll down to learn more! Our Women's History Month celebration begins in this month's Teen Board question, where we asked our members about their favorite female authors and heroines. My obvious answer is Lyra Belacqua from THE GOLDEN COMPASS, but to keep things fresh, here are some of my new favorites: Nemesis from THE DIABOLIC for her bravery; Audrey from STALKING JACK THE RIPPER for never giving up on her interests; and Piper from PIPER PERISH for her jazzy style and sense of creativity. Continuing our spotlight on awesome ladies, we have our Special Feature for LIFEBLOOD, the second book in Gena Showalter's Everlife series. Click here to read our rave review from Teen Board member Isabel C. and get ready for our interview with Gena, which will appear in our next newsletter. The fun continues on our blog, where we have some great posts from fabulous female authors. Up first, SECRETS OF A RELUCTANT PRINCESS author Casey Griffin shares her tips for creating a relatable heroine. If you're already in a spring break sort of mood, you'll love this post, where author Diana Rodriguez Wallach explains how she was able to turn a trip to Italy into a work expense by researching everyday details to flesh out her book, PROOF OF LIES. In books on screen news, we are just about two weeks away from the Netflix premiere of "13 Reasons Why," leaving you just enough time to give the book a re-read. If you can't wait for your YA film fix, you're in luck, as Before I Fall is finally in theaters. While the film is getting mixed reviews, star Zoey Deutch supposedly kills it --- and who doesn't want more Lauren Oliver in their lives? Last, but certainly not least, be sure to let us know when you find time to read in this month’s poll. Happy reading, --- Rebecca Munro (rebecca@bookreporter.com) Enter Our Annual Spring Fling Contest!Spring is finally here, and with it comes warmer weather, blooming flowers...and the chance to win some great new YA books! Special Feature: LIFEBLOOD by Gena ShowalterLast year, readers were introduced to Gena Showalter's FIRSTLIFE, a book set in a world where life begins after death. The star of the book, Tenley "Ten" Lockwood, is only 17, but has spent the last year of her life in an insane asylum --- not because of a mental instability, but because she has refused to allow her parents to choose where she will live after she dies. In the Everlife, your Firstlife is only a dress rehearsal for what comes after, and Ten is caught in the middle of a deadly battle for her soul. With two powerful, but deadly, realms fighting over her, Ten must stay alive long enough to make the right choice. Now, Showalter returns with LIFEBLOOD, the explosive sequel where we reunite with Ten, who must learn about her chosen realm from the ground up --- all while struggling to launch her first mission. You can learn more about LIFEBLOOD through our Special Feature, which includes a review and an excerpt, with an interview coming soon.
