ALA Announced Their 2013 Prize-Winning Books! Now It's YOUR Turn to Nominate Books for the Children's Book Council's 2013 Teen Choice Award

As I'm sure many of you know, yesterday the American Library Association (ALA) announced their winners of some of the biggest book prizes of the year. We at Teenreads.com watched the awards on a live webcast at 11AM. I grabbed some headphones and morning coffee before they began!
You will recognize many of these titles if you are a regular reader of Teenreads.com. For us, it was exciting to see that we featured many of them during 2012.
Read on for all the awards news, and to see if your favorite book won anything this year!
Now that the ALA has chosen their winning titles of the year, we want to hear about YOUR top YA choices of 2012! In association with the Children’s Book Council (CBC), Teenreads.com is giving you a very special opportunity to let your voices be heard by telling us your five favorite books of 2012. All you have to do is fill out the form found on this page between now and February 13th. The five titles that receive the most votes will serve as the finalists for the 2013 Teen Choice Book of the Year. You can see a list of suggested titles for nominees here --- but of course nominate anything that you loved, so long as it was published in 2012! Once the five finalists have been determined, we will tell you where you can go vote for them. The winner will be announced in May. Vote today --- and please share this link with your friends and ask them to vote too. This is a chance for YOU to pick the winners!

The Michael L. Printz Award for Excellence in Young Adult Literature |
The Michael L. Printz Award, established in 1999, honors excellence in literature written for young adults. The award-winning book may be fiction, nonfiction, poetry or an anthology and can be a work of joint authorship or editorship. Nominated books may have been previously published in another country, but must have been in the U.S. during the preceding year. The books must be designated by their publishers as either a young adult book or one published for ages 12 through 18. The award is named in honor of the late Michael L. Printz, longtime YALSA member and Topeka, Kansas, school librarian, known for discovering and promoting quality books for young adults.
-The winner of the Michael L. Printz Award is IN DARKNESS by Nick Lake.
-Four Printz Honor Books were named: ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE by Benjamin Alire Saenz, CODE NAME VERITY by Elizabeth Wein, DODGER by Terry Pratchet, and THE WHITE BICYCLE by Beverly Brenna.

The Coretta Scott King Awards |
Designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace, the Coretta Scott King Books Awards annually recognize outstanding books for young adults and children by African American authors and illustrators that reflect the African American experience. Further, the Award encourages the artistic expression of the black experience via literature and the graphic arts in biographical, social and historical treatments by African American authors and illustrators.
-The winner of the Coretta Scott King Author Award is HAND IN HAND: Ten Black Men Who Changed America written by Andrea Davis Pinkney and illustrated by Brian Pinkney.
-Two Coretta Scott King Author Honor Books were named: EACH KINDNESS written by Jacqueline Woodson, illustrated by E. B. Lewis; and NO CRYSTAL STAIR: A Documentary Novel of the Life and Work of Lewis Michaux, Harlem Bookseller written by Vaunda Micheaux Nelson, illustrated by R. Gregory Christie.
-The winner of the Coretta Scott King Illustrator Award is I, TOO, AM AMERICA illustrated by Bryan Collier and written by Langston Hughes.
-Three Coretta Scott King Illustrator Honor Book was named: H. O. R. S. E. written and illustrated by Christopher Myers; ELLEN'S BROOM illustrated by Daniel Minter, written by Kelly Starling Lyons; and I HAVE A DREAM: Martin Luther King, Jr. illustrated by Kadir Nelson, written by Martin Luther King, Jr..

The Coretta Scott King - Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement |
The Coretta Scott King-Virginia Hamilton Award for Lifetime Achievement is named in memory of distinguished and beloved children’s author Virginia Hamilton. The award is presented annually and in even years (i.e. 2012, 2014, 2016…) to an African American author, illustrator or author/illustrator for a body of his or her published books for children and/or young adults who has made a significant and lasting literary contribution.
In alternate years (i.e. 2011, 2013, 2015…), the award honors a practitioner for substantial contributions through active engagement with youth using award-winning African American literature for children and/or young adults, via implementation of reading and reading-related activities/programs.
Demetria Tucker is the 2013 recipient. Tucker has served as youth services coordinator within the Roanoke (Va.) Public Library System and library media specialist at the Forest Park Elementary School, where she was selected 2007 Teacher of the Year. As family and youth services librarian for the Pearl Bailey Library, a branch of the Newport News (Va.) Public Library System, Tucker now coordinates a youth leadership program, a teen urban literature club and many other programs that support the youth of her community. |

The Alex Awards |
The Alex Awards are given to 10 books written for adults that have special appeal to young adults, ages 12 through 18. The winning titles are selected from the previous year’s publishing. The award is sponsored by the Margaret Alexander Edwards Trust and Booklist. Edwards was a young adult specialist for many years at the Enoch Pratt Library in Baltimore. Her work is described in her book FAIR GARDEN AND THE SWARM OF BEASTS, and over the years she has served as an inspiration to librarians who serve young adults. The Alex Awards are named after Edwards, who was called “Alex” by her friends.
-The winners are: CARING IS CREEPY by David Zimmerman, GIRLCHILD by Tupelo Hassman, JUVENILE IN JUSTICE by Richard Ross, MR. PENUMBRA'S 24-HOUR BOOKSTORE by Robin Sloan, MY FRIEND DAHMER by Derf Backderf, ONE SHOT FOREVER by Chris Ballard, PURE by Julianna Baggott, THE ROUND HOUSE by Louise Erdrich, TELL THE WOLVES I'M HOME by Carol Rifka Brunt, and WHERE'D YOU GO, BERNADETTE? by Maria Semple.

The Margaret A. Edwards Award |
The Margaret A. Edwards Award, established in 1988, honors an author, as well as a specific body of his or her work, for significant and lasting contribution to young adult literature. The annual award is administered by YALSA and sponsored by School Library Journal magazine. It recognizes an author's work in helping adolescents become aware of themselves and addressing questions about their role and importance in relationships, society, and in the world.
Tamora Pierce is the recipient of the 2013 Margaret A. Edwards Award, honoring her significant and lasting contribution to writing for teens for Song of the Lioness quartet, which includes ALANNA: The First Adventure, IN THE HAND OF THE GODDESS, THE WOMAN WHO RIDES LIKE A MAN and LIONESS RAMPANT; and The Protector of the Small quartet, which includes FIRST TEST, PAGE, SQUIRE and LADY KNIGHT. |

The William C. Morris YA Debut Award |
The William C. Morris YA Debut Award celebrates the achievement of a previously unpublished author, or authors, who have made a strong literary debut in writing for young adult readers. The work cited illuminates the teen experience and enriches the lives of its readers through its excellence, demonstrated by compelling, high-quality writing and/or illustration, the integrity of the work as a whole, and its proven or potential appeal to a wide range of teen readers. The award's namesake is William C. Morris, an influential innovator in the publishing world and an advocate for marketing books for children and young adults.
-The winner of the William C. Morris YA Debut Award is SERAPHINA by Rachel Hartman.
-Four other books were finalists for the award: WONDER SHOW by Hannah Barnaby, LOVE AND OTHER PERISHABLE ITEMS by Laura Buzo, AFTER THE SNOW by S. D. Crockett, and THE MISEDUCATION OF CAMERON POST by emily m. danforth.

The Pura Belpré Award |
The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA), and the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking (REFORMA), an ALA affiliate.
The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. As a children's librarian, storyteller and author, she enriched the lives of Puerto Rican children in the U.S.A. through her pioneering work of preserving and disseminating Puerto Rican folklore.
-The winner of the Pura Belpré Author Award is ARISTOTLE AND DANTE DISCOVER THE SECRETS OF THE UNIVERSE by Benjamin Alire Sáenz.
-One Pura Belpré Author Honor Books were named: THE REVOLUTION OF EVELYN SERRANO by Sonia Manzano.
-The winner of the Pura Belpré Illustrator Award is MARTIN DE PORRES: The Rose in the Desert illustrated by David Diaz and written by Gary D. Schmidt.
-Please note that no Pura Belpré Illustrator Honor Books were selected this year.
