When people find out what I do for a living, the conversation quickly turns to books. At the doctor's office today, I gave three recommendations to the physician's assistant. At my water aerobics class yesterday, I shared what I thought a friend might like to read next after she noted what she is reading now.
What constantly amazes me is that in this world where there are influencers and social media, nothing seems to count more than someone you trust saying, “I think you would like to read this.” Also, it never fails to surprise me when I think that certain books already are on the radar of “everyone,” but then I start talking to people and even big bestsellers are not well known.
At a time when authors and publishers --- and yes, we at Reading Group Guides and Bookreporter --- are posting on social media almost every day, among my friends and family members, I easily can think of dozens of people who spend absolutely no time on social media. If that is where the message about new books is happening, they are missing it!
Word of mouth matters. THE CORRESPONDENT and THEO OF GOLDEN were made via word of mouth. It's one reader telling another, “I think you will like this.”
I am looking forward to seeing what book bubbles up next that was built by word of mouth.
When we first started our company, word of mouth was discussed a lot. Now, measurement seems to be made via likes and comments, and there are data specialists at the publishers.
But word of mouth is you telling one person, and then another and another. Think about what book you last enjoyed. Then talk it up. We all have the power to help build a book's readership. Think about how you can do that the next time you are out with friends and family!
And speaking of word of mouth... Each month, we've been compiling the guides that you have accessed the most. We love seeing which books are resonating with you. In the spirit of learning more about you and your group, we're curious about what you'll be reading with your group in July. Let us know here by Monday, July 27th, and we'll share the top results in our late July newsletter.
Bruce Holsinger joined us last Wednesday evening for this month’s “Bookaccino Live” Book Group event. We discussed his national bestseller, CULPABILITY, which was a Bookreporter.com. Bets On selection when it released last July.
This suspenseful family drama is about moral responsibility in the age of artificial intelligence. Bruce offered many interesting tidbits about the origin of the book’s plot, title and cover art, and he described the moment when he found out that it was going to be an Oprah’s Book Club pick.
Six readers joined the conversation on camera with questions about Bruce's storytelling and comments on how AI has quickly infused our lives. They also talked about how they related to the novel’s various characters. We closed out the program with Bruce sharing what’s next for him.
Click here to watch the event or here to listen to the podcast. This is our last “Bookaccino Live” Book Group program of the season as we will be taking July and August off before returning in September.
We recently hosted our “Bookaccino Live” Summer Preview event. I presented 46 books that are either out now or soon to be released this summer that we think you will enjoy reading. Included are fiction; historical fiction; thrillers and mysteries; and memoirs, biographies and other nonfiction.
Click here to watch the presentation and here to see a list of the featured titles. Don’t miss our Fall Preview evening program on Wednesday, September 16th!
My latest “Bookreporter Talks To” interview is with Lori Foster. Her new novel, THE LAKE HOUSE, is the second installment in her Firefly Summer series, following last year’s THE GUEST COTTAGE (though it easily can be read as a stand-alone title).
The book is set in Bramble, Kentucky, and Bronwyn Miller says in her Bookreporter review that it “would be perfect to toss into your bag as you head to the beach or the lake, or as you’re relaxing in your yard when you need a sweet escape from the everyday.”
Lori talks about being a linear writer, allowing the story to bring her along. The role of her new character, Brogan Rafferty, as an inexperienced caregiver provides both emotional depth and comic relief, grounding the novel in relatable human experiences. Amusingly, Lori enlisted her loved ones during a Sunday gathering to help her do the math on the ages of her characters across these two books, which became a fun family activity.

WHEN YOU LOVED ME is another sweeping story from Beatriz Williams set on Winthrop Island, the glittering retreat featured in HUSBANDS & LOVERS. This future Bets On title maps both a centuries-old treasure hunt and the intimate territory of the human heart, weaving together past and present as only Beatriz can.
In her review on Bookreporter, Pamela Kramer says, “There are surprising twists and beautiful turns. Williams excels in writing about non-traditional families, and Lucy's family fits that mold perfectly.” She goes on to say, “WHEN YOU LOVED ME has it all. There's plenty of action, romance and family drama, and readers are given a peek into the lives of the rich and famous. It's engaging, fascinating, moving and, above all, entertaining. This is Beatriz Williams at her best.”
Click here for the discussion guide and here to read the full review. We will feature my interview with Beatriz and my Bets On commentary in July.
Amanda Eyre Ward’s latest novel, ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES, features characters from her 2020 bestseller, THE JETSETTERS. Set along Greek beaches, the book is about one unforgettable family and the journeys we take --- across oceans and through heartbreak --- to find our way back to love.
According to Bookreporter reviewer Rebecca Munro, “Ward gracefully balances distance, misunderstandings and feelings of betrayal to craft a story that encompasses all the ways that a family can save one another... Though THE JETSETTERS will give readers a much better perspective on each member of the plucky Perkins clan, ARRIVALS AND DEPARTURES stands just as successfully on its own as a testament to the enduring yet complex bonds of family.”

Reese's Book Club pick for July is A FOUNDING MOTHER, the publication of which is timed perfectly for the 250th anniversary of the birth of the United States. Stephanie Dray and Laura Kamoie's latest novel is a sweeping, intimate portrayal of Abigail Adams --- wife of one president and mother to another --- whose wit, willpower and wisdom helped shape the fledgling republic. Click here for the guide.
The New York Times bestselling authors of AMERICA'S FIRST DAUGHTER and MY DEAR HAMILTON have this to say: “We have written about founding mothers before, including the secretive Martha 'Patsy' Jefferson Randolph and the supposedly saintly Eliza Schuyler Hamilton. Abigail Adams was neither secretive nor saintly. She was open and honest to a fault, never shy of asserting herself. In fact, she said, 'I am not apt to be intimidated.' Which may be why she was far more influential than any other founding mother.”
We also have added guides for these five books:
-
VILLA COCO: Andrew Sean Greer, the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of LESS, is back with a magical and madcap tale of a broke and directionless twentysomething who takes an unspecified job with a nonagenarian baronessa at her crumbling villa in the Tuscan hills.
-
THE HOUSEWIVES UNDERGROUND: Kaitlyn Tiffany resurrects the story of Maggie Field, Shirley Martin and Sylvia Meagher, who openly criticized the official account of the Kennedy assassination. Their collaboration and friendship reshaped both their own lives and our national memory.
-
NASTY LITTLE SECRETS: In Gabbie Hanks’ propulsive and razor-sharp debut novel, an infamous murder case is blown back open when a crime writer’s sister goes missing --- and her bestselling book might be the key to solving the disappearance.
-
SOCIAL ANIMALS: Set in an affluent suburban dog park, Camille Perri’s funny and sharp new novel uses comedy, suspense and social satire to explore loneliness, privilege, female friendship and the accidental communities we form around pets.
-
THE LADY IMAM: A feminist scholar-activist, single mother of five, and queer advocate, amina wadud has led a decades-long struggle against Islam’s patriarchal establishment. But the extraordinary story of this American trailblazer has never been told in book form...until now, by Pulitzer Prize finalist Carla Power.
I’m Betting You’ll Love…
My latest Bets On selection is DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON by Lisa See, an instant New York Times bestseller, for which we featured the guide earlier this month. Click here for my commentary. If you missed my interview with Lisa, be sure to watch or listen to it.
July’s “Read with Jenna” Book Club pick and Barnes & Noble Book Club selection is THE SHAMPOO EFFECT by Jenny Jackson, which will be a Bets On title. It's about an ambitious young woman who insinuates herself into a tight-knit social set, shaking up friendships and marriages in a small seaside town.
You may remember that Jenny’s New York Times bestselling debut novel, PINEAPPLE STREET, was a “Good Morning America” Book Club pick and also a Bets On selection.
Jenna calls THE SHAMPOO EFFECT “a delicious summer read” and goes on to say, “This is a novel about the people who have known us our whole lives and the ties that really bind us. It made me think of my own oldest friendships. I know you will love this one just as much as I do.”
And here’s what Norah Piehl says in her Bookreporter review: “If you're heading out on vacation soon --- or even if you’re doing more of a staycation --- THE SHAMPOO EFFECT just begs to be part of your summer reading plans this year.... Jenny Jackson's second novel offers the perfect blend of substance and style, all served up with plenty of small-town scandal.”
We will feature my interview with Jenny and my Bets On commentary in July.
This is your last Reading Group Guides newsletter reminder to sign up for July's “Bookaccino Live” book preview afternoon event, which will take place on Wednesday, July 8th at 2pm ET.

DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON by Lisa See
DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON by Lisa See (Historical Fiction)
Lisa See is well known and respected for her fiction that includes a little-known story of historical significance, as well as one of female friendship. DAUGHTERS OF THE SUN AND MOON brilliantly does just that.
The novel is set in Los Angeles when it was a dusty pueblo town in 1855. The idea for the book came to Lisa over 30 years ago as she was doing research for her nonfiction work, ON GOLD MOUNTAIN. She saw details about the Night of Horrors, which occurred on October 24, 1871. An angry mob of roughly 500 white and Latino people attacked the city's Chinese quarter, murdering 19 Chinese men and boys.
The story stayed with Lisa, and around it she constructed a narrative based on four women who were known to have lived during that time, making one into a composite character.

New Guide: THE HOUSEWIVES UNDERGROUND
by Kaitlyn Tiffany
THE HOUSEWIVES UNDERGROUND: The Untold Story of the Women Who Made the JFK Assassination Our Most Enduring Mystery by Kaitlyn Tiffany (History)
In the winter of 1967, the official account of the Kennedy assassination was beginning to unravel. A scattered group of Americans had pointed to major problems with the report prepared by President Johnson’s handpicked Warren Commission. Many of the most serious criticisms of the government’s work came from a source that surprised some: women who, within the community of critics, outnumbered the men two to one. Politicians and reporters dismissed these women, referring to them as “scavengers” and suggesting they were eccentrics with murder-mystery fixations or crushes on the deceased President Kennedy. But Kaitlyn Tiffany resurrects the story of Maggie Field, Shirley Martin and Sylvia Meagher, whose collaboration and friendship reshaped both their own lives and our national memory.
