Kidsreads.com Newsletter - January 2016
Hi Kidsreaders,
Quick Housekeeping Note: This newsletter arrives using our new newsletter mail platform. We’ve tried our best to keep everything as close to the old style as possible, but don’t be surprised if you see changes in the months ahead. Reading on your phone? Our newsletters are now mobile-friendly, so you can easily catch up on all the latest bookish news on the go!
Monday was one of the biggest days of the year for children's literature: the announcement of the ALA Youth Media Awards. Each year the American Library Association honors the books, videos and other outstanding works that have released that year for kids and teens and are recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent.
We've compiled all of the children's awards announcements here, but we'd like to take a moment to congratulate the winners of the John Newbery and Randolph Caldecott Medals. Author Kelly Barnhill won the Newbery for her gorgeously written and highly magical fantasy, THE GIRL WHO DRANK THE MOON. Author and illustrator Javaka Steptoe won the Caldecott for RADIANT CHILD, his masterful, stunning biography of Jean-Michel Basquiat. You can read more about these awards below!
As January draws to a close, we're still coming up with read-solutions for the year. Mine is definitely to read outside of my comfort zone, which means that I’ll be putting lots of high fantasies, graphic novels and even audiobooks on my reading list. Of course, I’d also like to top the number of books I read last year (164!), which is probably the most popular bookish resolution of all. Other ideas? Try a new genre or author, or even take reading off the page by starting a book club or visiting a new bookstore or library.
If you're still working on your own read-solution, be sure to check out our Nonfiction Picture Books bookshelf below. Nonfiction may sound like an immediate snooze-fest and too school-like, but when you throw some fabulous illustrations into the mix, things get interesting very fast. And the way we see it picture books are by no means just for little kids.
Whether you're interested in sports, animals or even artists and singers, you're sure to find at least one fascinating book on our newest bookshelf. I personally recommend STRANGE FRUIT by Gary Golio with illustrations by Charlotte Riley-Webb. STRANGE FRUIT tells the story of Billie Holiday, a famous jazz and blues singer who used her impressive talent to bring about great change. Not only is Billie's story inspiring, the illustrations in this book immediately pull you with their bright colors.
While we're on the subject of nonfiction picture books, I just have to share this story about a little girl who was inspired to dress up as Ruth Bader Ginsburg after reading I DISSENT by Debbie Levy with illustrations by Elizabeth Baddeley. Apparently Ginsburg even wrote the little girl back after her story went viral. How cool!
If you still need some inspiration to kick off your reading for 2017, check out this story about a four-year-old girl named Daliyah, who recently became a "librarian for a day" after reading her thousandth (!) book.
That's all for this update! As always, be sure to check out our series update below --- we've added titles to a whopping 24 different book series this month. Whew!
Happy reading,
--- Rebecca Munro (Rebecca@bookreporter.com)
