Pura Belpré Awards 2016

The award is named after Pura Belpré, the first Latina librarian at the New York Public Library. The Pura Belpré Award, established in 1996, is presented annually to a Latino/Latina writer and illustrator whose work best portrays, affirms and celebrates the Latino cultural experience in an outstanding work of literature for children and youth. It is co-sponsored by the Association for Library Service to Children (ALSC), a division of the American Library Association (ALA) and REFORMA, the National Association to Promote Library and Information Services to Latinos and the Spanish-Speaking, an ALA affiliate.

- The winner of the Pura Belpré Award (Illustrator) is THE DRUM DREAM GIRL illustrated by Rafael López. The book was written by Margarita Engle.
 
- Three Belpré Illustrator Honor Books were named: MY TATA'S REMEDIES = LOS REMEDIOS DE MI TATA illustrated by Antonio Castro L. and written by Roni Capin Rivera-Ashford; MANGO, ABUELA, AND ME illustrated by Angela Dominguez and written by Meg Medina; and FUNNY BONES: Posada and His Day of the Dead Calaveras illustrated and written by Duncan Tonatiuh.
 
- The winner of the Pura Belpré (Author) Award is ENCHANTED AIR: Two Cultures, Two Wings: A Memoir by Margarita Engle.
 
Two Belpré Author Honor Books were named: THE SMOKING MIRROR by David Bowles; and MANGO, ABUELA, AND ME written by Meg Medina and illustrated by Angela Dominguez.
