Coretta Scott King Awards 2015
Designed to commemorate the life and works of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and to honor Mrs. Coretta Scott King for her courage and determination to continue the work for peace, the Coretta Scott King Books Awards annually recognize outstanding books for young adults and children by African American authors and illustrators that reflect the African American experience. Further, the Award encourages the artistic expression of the black experience via literature and the graphic arts in biographical, social and historical treatments by African American authors and illustrators.
- The winner of the Coretta Scott King Award is BROWN GIRL DREAMING, written by Jacqueline Woodson.
- Three King Author Honor Books were selected: THE CROSSOVER by Kwame Alexander; HOW I DISCOVERED POETRY by Marilyn Nelson; and HOW IT WENT DOWN by Kekla Magoon
- The winner of the Coretta Scott King (Illustrator) Book Award is FIREBIRD, illustrated by Christopher Myers, written by Misty Copeland.
- Two King Illustrator Honor Books were selected: Christian Robinson for JOSEPHINE: The Dazzling Life of Josephine Baker by Patricia Hruby Powell; and Frank Morrison for LITTLE MELBA AND HER BIG TROMBONE by Katheryn Russell-Brown, published by Lee and Low Books, Inc.
- The winner of the Coretta Scott King/John Steptoe New Talent Award is WHEN I WAS THE GREATEST, written and illustrated by Jason Alexander.
