In THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP, Emily discovers that she’s a half-mermaid, and ever since, she’s taken readers on a whirlwind of watery adventures, from accidentally waking a legendary sea monster in EMILY WINDSNAP AND THE MONSTER FROM THE DEEP to discovering a trove of stolen memories in an alpine lake in EMILY WINDSNAP AND THE LAND OF THE MIDNIGHT SUN. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the series, author Liz Kessler gives us a list of her top favorite things about Emily Windsnap. Read on to learn more about this adventurous girl and all of her amazing qualities!
My Top Ten Favorite Things about Emily Windsnap
1. Let’s start with the basics. She is a MERMAID! Or to be more precise, a semi-mer. She gets to live a normal life AND be a mermaid whenever she goes in water. Which, you have to admit, is very swishy!
2. She is brave. Dodging hammerhead sharks, exploring underground tunnels, fighting with enormous sea monsters --- you name it, she’s probably done it.
3. She’s loyal. She will do anything for her family and for her best friend, Shona. She’d never let them down and will always be there for them.
4. She lives on a boat. I lived on a boat for about 10 years and loved it, so I get to relive those days when I write (or read!) these books.
5. She stands up for what she believes in. She won’t let anyone order her about --- not even Neptune! If someone’s doing something that she thinks is wrong, she’ll tell them.
6. She fought to bring the mer and human worlds together, which means that lots more people get to be friends who might never have even known of each other’s existence without her.
7. She’s fUn. You certainly couldn’t get bored hanging around with Emily. You’d be too busy exploring some newly discovered caves or swimming out to a far-off island or getting up to mischief of some sort!
8. As well as being a mermaid, she’s just an ordinary girl. I think that’s maybe why she’s so popular. She’s the kind of person we’d all like as our best friend because she’s just like us!
9. She chose me to write about her!
10. Writing her stories gives me the opportunity to go to exciting places. St Michael’s mount in Cornwall, the midnight sun in Norway, the beaches of Bermuda --- I’ve been to all of these places in order to research the Emily Windsnap books. And they are all beautiful and special places which I might never have visited if it hadn’t been for her.
Roll on adventure number six!
