Set in the land of Gwynedd within the Eleven Kingdoms, the Deryni, a race of people with psychic and magic abilities, live alongside standard humans, and at times each side finds fear of the other that leads to political machinations, and sometimes all out war. Within this larger frame are incredible personal lives, detailed wonderfully by Kurtz. The Chronicles of the Deryni is a sprawling collection. Despite its size (five trilogies plus a stand-alone and two short story collections) it is a series that is, unfortunately, often missed. Katherine Kurtz deserves far more praise than she gets for her work.
