The first two books in the Starbound trilogy - - - THESE BROKEN STARS and THEIR SHATTERED WORLD - - - follow two different couples as they are forced to come together and navigate through tough situations. Each pair discovers that LaRoux Industries is holding other-worldly beings called “whispers” captive, and that LaRoux must be stopped.
Picking up months after the previous book, THEIR FRACTURED LIGHT follows Gideon, a hacker that the galaxy knows as the Knave of Hearts, and Sofia, an orphan con-artist seeking revenge. After a quick few hours, the unlikely pair is forced to unite against their common enemy, LaRoux Industries. Sofia and Gideon find themselves on the run, keeping secrets from each other when they need to trust each other the most. Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner craft an epic finale full of romance, secrets and betrayal.
Out of the entire Starbound series, I found myself enjoying this book the most. It picks up right when Gideon and Sofia meet, and their meeting is my favorite of all the couples. Immediately, both characters are likable and fun to read about. Gideon’s arrogance and quick attraction is enjoyable, and Sofia is strong with a quick wit and thoughtful mind. I loved to watch Sofia con people to get her way to safety and how quick she was on her feet. Both characters had a hilarious and constant back and forth, but each had lots of depth. Watching them try to deal with their trust issues was fascinating but frustrating. At some points, I begged for them to just open up and let each other in.

If you are worried about not seeing characters from previous books, fear not. Along with Gideon and Sofia, the two couples from the previous books appear for the last chunk of the book. All of their lives and pasts connect together in such interesting ways, and it’s fun to watch them work together to defeat the enemy. Even some side characters from other books connect, making for some surprises along the way. The reader also gets a glimpse at the whispers’ point of view, which is even more fascinating than it sounds.
Usually trilogies have a weaker ending, but that did not occur in THEIR FRACTURED LIGHT. Though I was hoping for a little more action, the plot kept me on the edge of my seat with many unexpected twists and turns along the way. Every bit of the story got wrapped up beautifully, leaving the reader with a sense of satisfaction. I would recommend this to anyone who has read the first one or two books of the series, and to anyone looking to get into science fiction. Overall, THEIR FRACTURED LIGHT is an excellent ending for an even better trilogy that will make you both laugh and cry and keep you entertained the entire time.
