In THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING, by Morgan Matson, Andie went into the summer before her junior year with a plan. She was going to attend one of the best pre-med programs for high school students in the country, which would put her on track for a good college, in turn putting her on track for a good career. Then, the world came crashing down around her. After a huge scandal involving her dad --- a well-known senator --- hits the press, her summer is suddenly not so perfect anymore. Andie can’t go to the program and ends up taking a job walking dogs. This summer is definitely not what she expected.

“THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING is fun and heartwarming, making it impossible not to enjoy.”

Matson wrote many popular contemporary books like AMY AND ROGER’S EPIC DETOUR, and SINCE YOU’VE BEEN GONE, as well as some others under her pen name, Katie Finn. I have read almost all of her books and have enjoyed every single one, so I was excited to see if this was as good as the rest.

Luckily, it was. Matson takes the reader on a fun summer adventure with scavenger hunts, road trips, first loves and lots of dogs. One of Matson’s greatest talents is making the reader feel like they are actually partaking in all of the Andie’s summer adventures with her friends and not just reading about it. If I could, I would use a bunch of heart-eyed emojis to describe how much I enjoyed the book, especially since emojis are a huge part of the book.

The best aspect of THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING was the relationship between the characters. Like Matson’s past books, THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING revolves around friendships. It was refreshing to read a contemporary novel focused on both the good (and the bad) that comes along with friendship. The dialogue between characters seemed natural and fun. It reminded me a lot of my own friendships and was super fun to read.

Although friendships were the main focus, other relationships in the novel were also really well-written. Reading about the development between father and daughter was touching and incredibly well done. And of course, Matson always knows how to write a romance. Even though the love interests from her other books are definitely swoon-worthy, the one from this book, Oliver, takes the cake. He makes my nerdy heart happy, like he would with any reader.

THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING is a great book that I have happily added to my Morgan Matson collection. I’d recommend it to anyone who has gone through friend trouble, but also to anyone who just wants a good read centered around friends. THE UNEXPECTED EVERYTHING is fun and heartwarming, making it impossible not to enjoy.

Andie has a plan. And she always sticks to her plan.

Future? A top-tier medical school.
Dad? Avoid him as much as possible (which isn’t that hard considering he’s a Congressman and he’s never around).
Friends? Palmer, Bri, and Toby --- pretty much the most awesome people on the planet, who needs anyone else?
Relationships? No one’s worth more than three weeks.

So it’s no surprise that Andie’s got her summer all planned out too.
