New from Jonah Lisa Dyer and Stephen Dyer, THE SEASON is a rip-roaring trip through debutantes, drama and debonair suitors. Everyone knows Megan McKnight is not Southern-belle material. She would rather be running sprints down the soccer field or maxing out on her bench press than attending galas and enjoying tea with other girls. Megan is perfectly content to leave her twin sister, Julia, with the dresses and boys. But when Megan’s mother finds a way to get both twins enrolled in the Dallas debutante season, Megan is given no other choice than to accept her fate as a debutante. However, that does not mean she has to like it. In fact, Megan plans on being the most disgraceful debutante Dallas has ever seen.

Once the season begins, Megan discovers there is much more to being a debutante than drinking tea and gossiping. In fact, some of the plays being made by the other debutantes rival some of the moves girls have pulled on the soccer field. Megan becomes determined to make an impression on this debutante season. As the end of the season draws closer, Megan begins to realize that not everyone is who they claim to be. With her future on the line, Megan must decide who is to be trusted and who has ulterior motives.
Jonah Lisa Dyer and Stephen Dyer did an excellent job of creating a modern retelling of PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. Despite the novel’s appearance, THE SEASON is definitely more mature than one would expect. The main character, Megan McKnight, is hilariously funny. She is a character who the reader will not be able to help but root for. Megan undergoes embarrassing, cringe-worthy moments with spunk and attitude. Her twin sister, Julia, balances out Megan’s character perfectly, and the way the two interact is heartwarming and realistic.
The plot itself encompasses the various aspects of Megan’s life, which grow more and more complicated as the season continues. Although readers may be able to predict certain plot twists, Megan’s responses to the changes in her life are anything but predictable. THE SEASON also teaches that there are different types of strength. Megan only thinks of strength in terms of soccer, but throughout the novel, she discovers there is more than just physical strength.
Overall, THE SEASON follows Megan McKnight as she navigates the Dallas debutante season. Although Megan enters the season with low expectations, she discovers the season is more than she anticipated, with a new lesson to be learned and a new challenge to conquer around every corner. THE SEASON is perfect for mature readers who would enjoy a light-hearted yet insightful story told by an amusing narrator.
