THE PECULIAR is one of the most exciting books I have read in a while. In my opinion, the highest compliment one writer can give another is, “I wish I could have written that.” I kept thinking that while reading Bachmann’s incredibly creative story. He brings his fantastic imagination to life with vivid descriptions, but leaves enough space for the reader to fill with her own imagination.

This book is a cross between J.K. Rowling’s Harry Potter seriesand Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events. I was filled with the same sense of wonder and curiosity about the magical realm as when I read the Harry Potter series and the same fear of the weird and dark as when I readA Series of Unfortunate Events. Bachmann adds his own ideas to common magic folklore and continued to surprise, scare, or shock me throughout the pages.
I would recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of fantasy, magic, mystery, action, steam-punk, or gothic novels. THE PECULIAR has something for every reader. Both Arthur Jelliby and Bartholomew are unusual and unexpected heroes. They are not magical or physically strong, but they have that something that makes them special. Mr. Jelliby is funny, lovable, and deeply caring. Bartholomew has a great inner strength, despite being an outcast of this old English society.
I must warn that the ending is a cliffhanger and I am hoping that Bachmann has a sequel already in the works because I can’t wait for it!
