Books have always been a way to escape the real world for Amy Lennox. But after nothing remains at their home in Germany but painful reminders, Amy and her mother, Alexis, travel on a spontaneous trip to Alexis’s hometown, an island near Scotland called Stormsay. After seeing the world her mother abruptly left when she was 16, Amy begins to realize that not all on Stormsay is as it seems.
"Gläser writes the world of every bibliophile’s dream, weaving a unique cast of new characters and those long loved with an unpredictable scheme that leads every which way."
Amy soon learns that her love for books stems from a much deeper passion for literature that has run in her family for thousands of years: the Lennox clan has the ability to jump into books and interact with the characters and stories. Amy ventures into the fictional world, meeting with all of her favorite characters and seeing a new side to the stories she has always loved. Unfortunately, book jumping is not the simple bliss it appears to be. Something is afoot in the literary world --- something dangerous.
A book jumper’s duty is to make sure that the stories are not altered, and everything in the books stay just as they were written. When crucial ideas begin to go missing from classic stories, Amy makes it her business to find the thief. Amy and her fellow book jumper from a rival clan, Will, must travel through countless worlds and dangerous plots to discover the truth behind the stolen ideas, before the stories are destroyed forever.
Gläser writes the world of every bibliophile’s dream, weaving a unique cast of new characters and those long loved with an unpredictable scheme that leads every which way. She reminds us that even when we seem to be completely alone in the world, book characters will always be there to welcome us home. The lovable personalities of THE BOOK JUMPER began with our main character, Amy. She is the perfect portrayal of every reader with her endless love for literature, and stubborn but loving traits. Her close family and friends add on to the brilliant characters that burrow close to every reader’s heart. While the story is very plot-heavy, without in depth explorations of the characters and their relationships with each other, I still found a way to connect with everyone in the story in some way.
Some books may contain expected outcomes that most readers are able to conclude, but THE BOOK JUMPER drops subtle hints throughout the entire story, until they are all revealed as connected as the action of the finale begins. My yearning to discover exactly what occurred kept me turning the pages long into the night, until I could finally be at peace, with a perfectly satisfactory ending that is perfect, but not overwhelmingly so.
In a novel of madness and unbelievable abilities, Gläser shows us that even without magical powers, we are still able to envelop ourselves in a fantastical world by just turning the page.
