In Rebecca Behren’s SUMMER OF LOST AND FOUND, Nell Dare’s summer vacation takes a dramatic turn. Her plans of spending the summer in New York City with her best friend get completely shattered when her mom asks her to come along on a research project in Roanoke Island. So instead of attending a club at the Central Park Zoo, she prepares herself for the worst summer ever --- not to mention her dad left for London without even saying goodbye.

"The book is a jigsaw puzzle that involves putting together the pieces of important relationships and discovering whether or not the characters will uncover their feelings about their pasts."

Shortly after arriving in Roanoke Island she meets a girl named Lila who tells her about a mysterious lost colony --- no one knows what happened to it or the people who occupied it. Lila is a ghost hunter and believes the colonists are haunting the island, which causes people to take her less seriously (including her father). It’s too bad that Lila is a know-it-all --- they could possibly team up to solve the mystery. When Nell goes to a historical reenactment she meets a reenactor named Ambrose, a cute but peculiar boy, who wants to help her solve the mystery.  But soon, looking for clues turns dangerous, and the biggest surprise is right in front of her the whole time.

About the Book

From the author of WHEN AUDREY MET ALICE comes a sweeping middle grade novel about a city girl forced to spend her summer in North Carolina, where she becomes involved in a centuries-old mystery, turning her once boring vacation into an adventure she never could have imagined.

Nell Dare expected to spend her summer vacation hanging out with her friends in New York City. That is, until her botanist mom dragged her all the way to Roanoke Island for a research trip. To make matters worse, her father suddenly and mysteriously leaves town, leaving no explanation or clues as to where he went --- or why.

While Nell misses the city --- and her dad --- a ton, it doesn’t take long for her to become enthralled with the mysteries of Roanoke and its lost colony. And when Nell meets Ambrose --- an equally curious historical reenactor --- they start exploring for clues as to what really happened to the lost colonists. As Nell and Ambrose’s discoveries of tantalizing evidence mount, mysterious things begin to happen --- like artifacts disappearing. And someone --- or something --- is keeping watch over their quest for answers.

It looks like Nell will get the adventurous summer she was hoping for, and she will discover secrets not only about Roanoke, but about herself.
