Jeff Probst's REMARKABLE PLANTS is a treasure trove of plant facts. Beginning with the first plants on earth, Probst explores the way plants and animals have supported one another through a symbiotic relationship since the birth of our planet. This book teaches children about the complex relationship between plants and animals and the world we know today. With a vibrant layout and factual asides, this book will inspire and intrigue the most reluctant learners. It is an accessible book for children from kindergarten through grade school and parents and children alike will marvel at the new vocabulary they develop together.
"Probst narrates his first children's science book with a tone that is both whimsical and dramatic....With vibrant pictures and a wacky organization, readers will easily glide through this longer book."
REMARKABLE PLANTS delves deeply into the most basic survival of plants with sections on plants that survive in a myriad of environments including the dessert, jungle and underwater. Probst discuses how these plants survive using the few resources they have and how the enlist the help of the elements, animals and humans to propagate. There are a considerable number of pages dedicated to the dangers of some plants as well as their medicinal properties. Some of these content may not be appropriate for every child so parental discretion is advised.
Probst narrates his first children's science book with a tone that is both whimsical and dramatic. It is at times hectic, taking on the layout of a website or even television show. With vibrant pictures and a wacky organization, readers will easily glide through this longer book. Probst inserts small pictures of his face next to asides throughout the book and appears flabbergasted by some of the facts he presents. He even goes so far as to say that he learned all of the material as he was writing this book, which can leave readers wondering how competent he is at teaching it.
REMARKABLE PLANTS begins as a chronological history of the development of flora then becomes a disorganized book of facts one third of the way through. The middle and end is a page-by-page book of fact with somewhat irrelevant asides about various plants Probst has experienced during his time hosting "Survivor." This random assortment of facts could have been more seamlessly tied into the overall narrative however they stand alone providing disjointed information. Without strong organization it can be difficult to see how all these facts fit into a cohesive understanding of plants.
The focus on vocabulary with a handy glossary is both simulating and the best attribute of this book. I would recommend this book for all children who have an interest in plants and parents who would like to brush up on their botanical vocabulary. It's a fun and educational as well as dangerous exploration of the world of plants and will surely ignite the inner botanist in all who read it.
