If you’re reading this review, it’s because you’re like most kids (and adults, if we’re being honest) and have a secret desire to be a ninja. You’ve already mastered the art of sneaking around your home, grocery store or school without being seen. You wear black all the time, not just because it’s in fashion, but because you can conceal yourself in the shadows at a moment’s notice. You have ceased using your real name a long time ago and instead refer to yourself by your ninja name like ‘Master Lotus’ or ‘Dragon King’ or ‘Swinging Blade.’ In fact, some of you may even be full-fledged ninjas and want to make sure that JOEY AND JOHNNY, THE NINJAS: GET MOONED accurately represents the ninja lifestyle without giving away any trade secrets.
Well, ninjas, rest assured. JOEY AND JOHNNY, THE NINJAS: Get Mooned is one of the most authentic ninja books that has come along in recent memory. How do I know it’s authentic? First, Joey and Johnny attend the prestigious Kickfoot Academy where the classes consist of advanced weaponry, camouflage and sparring, and most of the time students must fight for food, water and sleep on a daily basis. Second, Joey and Johnny have their own wise man who tells the tales of their great deeds. Only real ninjas have wise men. Third, Joey and Johnny study under the great Master FangSwan: Headmaster of Kickfoot Academy, Chieftain of the Twenty Screaming Winds, Lord of the Volcanic Lair of Blight, Slayer of the Ghost Samurai Horratto, and Vanquisher of the Beast Who Ate Mount Kimchi. Master FangSwan believes in the ninja way and rejects anything not-ninja --- particularly advanced technology.

Kickfoot Academy has long held the reputation as the best ninja academy around, but all that changes once its rival, Red Moon Clan, challenges Kickfoot Academy. Red Moon Clan claims that ninja training must be modernized by using technology while Kickfoot Academy argues technology has no place in the creation of expert ninjas. JOEY AND JOHNNY, THE NINJAS: GET MOONED is pretty hilarious. There are inside jokes that only ninjas and ninjas-in-training will understand, and many of the accompanying illustrations only add to the hilarity. I imagine authors Chris Pallace and Kevin Serwacki drew on their years of experience as ninjas to make sure that readers wouldn’t walk away from this book disappointed --- and you won’t be. If you are serious about ninjas, or a serious ninja, you won’t want to miss this book.
