College sweethearts Jack and Jill Tingley, an enviable couple from all appearances, seem to have it all. Living the good life --- successful, wealthy, gorgeous --- what more could anyone ask for? They have been together for 20 years. And if you ask Jill, she’ll tell you it’s because they were meant for each other. Jack and Jill, just like the nursery rhyme. How adorable!

But lately Jack’s eye has wandered. And now that he’s found Erica, he knows what real love is. He and Jill have been growing apart. Surely even Jill will have to admit that. Their daughter, Maggie, can see it; it’s so obvious. Jill, though, dismisses the idea as ridiculous. All she and Jack need is for her to fix it. She has always fixed whatever has gone wrong. Ever since the night Jack’s best friend, Ted, died. The night that bound them together forever.

"Kaira Rouda has crafted a chilling, spine-tingling novel of domestic suspense. Jill Tingley is one of the scariest characters of the year."

So Jill has arranged a trip to Utah to help them reconnect. Jack would rather be anywhere but on the road with Jill. However, he agrees to go along this one last time if it will make her happy. He has promised Erica this will be the end. He plans to talk to Jill about a divorce. She’ll have to see that their marriage is no longer working. Won’t she? The thing is, all Jill wants is Jack. It’s as simple as that. Jill is not happy without Jack. And in order to make him understand that they are meant for each other, she must make him see reason. It’s just that her methods are, shall we say, somewhat extreme.

Jack is a little late on the uptake when he begins to realize that. But is he too late? The answer to that depends on what you’re talking about. At least he begged off the starlight walk along the canyon rim with Jill. He’s convinced he would not have survived that. Jill is so obsessed with him that, if she can’t have him, then no one can. And she’s found out about his girlfriend. The one saving grace is that Erica will be safe while Jill is away with Jack. But before they get back, he must convince his wife to let him go, move on, and realize he does not want to be with her. She can’t possibly want him if he doesn’t want her, can she? Poor Jack, he just doesn’t get it.

JILL IS NOT HAPPY…without Jack. Period.

Kaira Rouda has crafted a chilling, spine-tingling novel of domestic suspense. Jill Tingley is one of the scariest characters of the year. She is beautiful and oozes charm, which makes people blind to her scheming ways. Jill appears harmless, but in reality she is darkly shrewd, calculating and obsessed, and she doesn’t play by society’s rules. She won’t hesitate to eliminate anyone who gets in her way, including her own daughter. For some strange reason, Jill seems to carry a hateful grudge against Maggie, who fortunately knows well enough to stay out of her mother’s orbit. But Jack doesn’t have that luxury in order to keep others safe. He must outwit Jill, or he’ll be caught in her web for a lifetime.

As I said, Jill is one terrifying character, which makes JILL IS NOT HAPPY a true thriller in the richest sense.
