To Audrey Casella, the Hotel Ruby is her last family vacation before her dad drops her and her brother off at their grandmother’s house. Her dad says he will be back to pick them up eventually, but Audrey knows the truth: the resemblance they bear to her recently deceased mother will prevent him from returning. What Audrey does not know is how to deal with her own grief, which threatens to ruin her.

The Hotel Ruby provides a welcome distraction from her tragic past as the nights whirl by in a sea of parties, rooftop adventures and tours with Elias Lange, a handsome guest of the Ruby. But despite all the grandeur and prestige surrounding it, Audrey cannot shake the feeling that something is off about the famed hotel and its inhabitants. Audrey attempts to uncover the mysteries of the hotel before her stay is over forever.

A classic novel revolving around an intriguing plotline and dazzling setting

HOTEL RUBY combines suspense, mystery and romance to create a compelling story that is reminiscent of the 1920’s. Suzanne Young does an excellent job of heightening the suspense and intrigue at each new chapter of the novel. While the book is not scary in a typical sense, Audrey’s pervasive feeling that something is wrong with the hotel will make readers apprehensive of what she may discover. Persistent questions about Audrey’s past will also keep readers in suspense, and keep the plot moving forward.

Suzanne Young also includes an element of grandeur about the Hotel Ruby. With elaborate, exclusive parties thrown every night, old music playing through the halls and grandiloquent characters, it seems as though Audrey has stepped back into a different, luxurious time period.

Although the plot of HOTEL RUBY is intriguing, the dialogue and character reactions are very predictable and slightly stereotypical. However, overall, HOTEL RUBY is a classic novel revolving around an intriguing plotline and dazzling setting.

About the Book

When Audrey Casella arrives for an unplanned stay at the grand Hotel Ruby, she’s grateful for the detour. Just months after their mother’s death, Audrey and her brother, Daniel, are on their way to live with their grandmother, dumped on the doorstep of a DNA-matched stranger because their father is drowning in his grief.

Audrey and her family only plan to stay the night, but life in the Ruby can be intoxicating, extending their stay as it provides endless distractions --- including handsome guest Elias Lange, who sends Audrey’s pulse racing. However, the hotel proves to be as strange as it is beautiful. Nightly fancy affairs in the ballroom are invitation only, and Audrey seems to be the one guest who doesn’t have an invite. Instead, she joins the hotel staff on the rooftop, catching whispers about the hotel’s dark past.

The more Audrey learns about the new people she’s met, the more her curiosity grows. She’s torn in different directions --- the pull of her past with its overwhelming loss, the promise of a future that holds little joy, and an in-between in a place that is so much more than it seems…

And the 13th chapter will only add to the mystery behind the 13th floor of Hotel Ruby...and ultimately, what it means for Audrey.

Welcome to the Ruby.
