In HIDDEN IN SMOKE, the third installment in Lee Goldberg’s series featuring Walter Sharpe and Andrew Walker, the arson investigators join forces to figure out who is setting fires to apartment buildings in Hollywood. They have worked together for years and share a past that is totally unrelated to their present careers, bonding them through thick and thin.

While Sharpe and Walker are getting the ball rolling on their investigation, a larger, more catastrophic blaze erupts in Hollywood. A bridge across a local freeway is destroyed due to a large fire burning underneath it. Its collapse puts a major strain on the city’s traffic. Sharpe and Walker are instructed by the mayor to do whatever it takes to determine what happened.
When it appears that the fire was set deliberately, Sharpe and Walker call in homicide detectives Eve Ronin and Duncan Pavone to facilitate in the investigation. However, things go south when troubles escalate, revealing an old enemy of Sharpe and Walker who has reared his ugly head.
HIDDEN IN SMOKE shifts from present day to three months prior as Goldberg keeps going back and forth, weaving in a backstory to give proper context to what is going on now. This creates a well-rounded tale with plenty of action and subplots that take the narrative in several different directions at the same time. It also gives readers a wealth of background information about all the major and minor players in the story, resulting in characters who are both interesting and believable.
