Losing a family member is terrible. Killing her is worse. But worse still is the knowledge that you will eventually commit this crime.
Callie has led a good life so far. She’s lost her one friend, Logan, over time, and has only her mother and younger sister for company. That’s enough for her --- until she receives her future memory.
In the memory, she learns what she will do in her future. Horrified and unable to let this truth sink in, she is detained and placed with all of the other memory receivers who are deemed “aggressive.” With the help of Logan, who becomes her friend once again, she makes it out and into Harmony, a place where people like her can live happily. While she thinks living in Harmony keeps her baby sister Jessa safe, ComA, the organization that takes psychic children for testing, is after Jessa.
This book is definitely a good one --- great for all who love dystopian fiction with a hint of romance.
Pintip Dunn’s FORGET TOMORROW is a dystopian fiction novel akin to Lois Lowry’s THE GIVER. The protagonist’s struggle to exercise freewill in the face of an already written destiny comprises a majority of the plot. Callie sets a precedent for not following the status quo in her community. She cooks from scratch rather than eating manufactured food. She keeps the secret of her sister’s psychic ability. Finally, she leaves her community against the law. Her great love for her sister motivates her actions. True to her character and herself, this love for her sister brings her to the very moment that puts herself and her sister in their greatest peril. Ultimately, readers see the value of sacrifice, not just from Callie but from all those in Harmony.
This book is definitely a good one --- great for all who love dystopian fiction with a hint of romance. There may be some kissing, but everything is very well written with very few highly descriptive romantic scenes. Many of the characters, though minor, are imperative to the plot, and it takes a good mind to match names to faces and titles to owners. There is very light language, but not enough to be offensive. Readers will be looking forward to the next book in this series.
