FIRSTLIFE is the first book in a new series by Gena Showalter. She’s written YA paranormal romances such as the Alice in Zombieland series, as well as adult paranormal and contemporary romance.

FIRSTLIFE begins in an insane asylum, which happens to be one of my favorite book settings. In this world, people have first lives here on earth and second lives in magical afterworld like places. The main character, Ten, has refused to let her parents decide which afterlife she will go to once she dies, so she is locked up until she either agrees to go to her parents' afterlife or she turns 18.

FIRSTLIFE is a really fun, fast read. It’s a great start to an awesome-looking series, and I can’t wait to see where it goes from here!

Insane asylums are awesome places for books to take place, as the possibilities are endless. Characters can go off their rocker at any time, immediately causing chain reactions of things to happen. Ten is on the crazy side, but some of the other inmates are way crazier than her.

Along with being a little crazy, Ten is really smart. I really liked her character. At times she could be a little annoying, but nothing that wasn’t manageable given the situations she was in.

All of the characters in FIRSTLIFE are really unique. You see sides to every story that you don’t always get in books. Everyone has a reason for doing what they do, even if you don’t know it at first. Characters' motivations are continuously being revealed and changing.

I really enjoyed FIRSTLIFE and devoured it in only a couple of days. I’m a big fan of Gena Showalter becaue of her other books, so it wasn’t a surprise to me that I loved this one. While I’ve read books that may have had similar ideas as the ones portrayed in FIRSTLIFE, this one is wholly unique. It’s an interesting premise that could have easily been carried out awfully, but Showalter did an amazing job with it.

I definitely recommend this to fans of Gena Showalter. It has the same feel as the Alice in Zombieland series, too. The two books are completely different, but fill that same hole in my heart. I have a feeling fans of BLACK CITY by Elizabeth Richards would also enjoy FIRSTLIFE.

ONE CHOICE.

TWO REALMS.

NO SECOND CHANCE.

Tenley "Ten" Lockwood is an average 17-year-old girl…who has spent the past 13 months locked inside the Prynne Asylum. The reason? Not her obsession with numbers, but her refusal to let her parents choose where she'll live --- after she dies.

There is an eternal truth most of the world has come to accept: Firstlife is merely a dress rehearsal, and real life begins after death.

In the Everlife, two realms are in power: Troika and Myriad, longtime enemies and deadly rivals. Both will do anything to recruit Ten, including sending their top Laborers to lure her to their side. Soon, Ten finds herself on the run, caught in a wild tug-of-war between the two realms who will do anything to win the right to her soul. Who can she trust? And what if the realm she's drawn to isn't where the boy she's falling for lives? She just has to stay alive long enough to make a decision…
