Life is pretty good for Cynthia Rothschild. Her best friend, Annie, is always there for her, she’s finally head of the theater’s tech department, and her seat in Italian has the perfect view of school hottie Ryan Halsey. It looks like the year is going to go well for Cynthia until Annie ends up falling head-over-heels for the new school librarian. That wouldn’t be too much of a problem if he wasn’t, you know, evil. Cynthia knows something is off about Mr. Gabriel the minute she sees him, but it doesn’t quite sink in until she sees him transform into what he truly is --- a demon.
EVIL LIBRARIAN is a cute, funny and adventurous novel that YA readers will adore.
When Cynthia hears of Mr. Gabriel’s plan to drain the school of their souls and to make Annie his demon bride, she is determined to stop him. After more demons start to invade the school, Cynthia knows this won’t be as easy as she thought. Luckily, she finds that she is a “super roach,” meaning demon powers don’t work on her. With the help of Ryan and some other unlikely sources, it looks like Mr. Gabriel might just be able to be defeated. But with the school musical and a major demon battle on the same day, Cynthia wonders if she’ll be able to make it out of this alive.
EVIL LIBRARIAN is a cute, funny and adventurous novel that YA readers will adore.It has a mix of everything, including monsters, magic, romance and adventure. All of the characters in the novel are enjoyable, even those of the demon variety. Cynthia makes a great protagonist --- she’s brave and loyal, someone readers will be eager to cheer on. And Mr. Gabriel is a wonderful villain. Delightfully evil, he’s a character the audience will love to hate. The chemistry and dialogue between the characters is definitely EVIL LIBRARIAN’s strong point. Readers will undoubtedly want to hear more about Cynthia and her friends once they read her story.
EVIL LIBRARIAN is fast-paced and a quick read, great for teens interested in a lighter novel. The plot is enjoyable and funny, though some parts of the writing seem to be a bit childish. However, Knudsen does a good job of writing from a teenager’s perspective and adds a sense of humor to the art of demon hunting. Plus, she draws readers quickly into the story and holds them there until the last page. EVIL LIBRARIAN is Knudsen’s first book for teens and hopefully not the last. Cynthia is definitely not done with demon slaying.
