Freida McFadden has become one of the most recognized thriller writers in the world. She also happens to be basking in the glow of the successful film adaptation of her novel, THE HOUSEMAID. A sequel already has been greenlit, based on THE HOUSEMAID’S SECRET, and is scheduled to be released at the end of 2027.
McFadden’s latest book, DEATH ROW, is a novella. I was amazed by how she uses this structure to convey a story that immediately hooks readers with a clever premise and plenty of plot twists. This all happens in just under 75 pages!
"DEATH ROW is easily a one-sit read that will be more than worth your while. This memorable tale manipulates readers from the very first word right up to the unique conclusion."
The quick prologue introduces us to Talia Kemper, who is on death row for the murder of her husband, Noel. There is one piece of information that Talia wishes to leave us with --- she swears she did not kill him. In a genre where unreliable narrators seem to be the norm, I can understand why you might be a bit skeptical of her claims. Trust me when I say that there are many layers to this short tale, and your head will be spinning long before it’s over.
The novella jumps between the present day with Talia in a women’s prison awaiting her execution and moments from the past that walk you through her relationship with Noel. Judging from their initial meeting, which takes place at a restaurant where he comes across as extremely clever and likable, it is easy to see how she falls for him the way she does.
Talia has one last hope for an appeal. But when she has a face-to-face meeting with her defense attorney, Clarence Bowman, he breaks the unfortunate news that her request has been denied. So she must come to terms with the fact that she is going to be put to death shortly. Although she was confident that her alibi of being out to dinner with her best friend at the time Noel perished in a home fire was airtight, the appeals committee felt that she was more than able to set the stove gas line to be open for her husband’s fatal accident. Whether or not this is true will be kept under wraps until the end of the story.
Just as Talia is being taken back to her cell, she asks the prison guard to stop and urges her to disclose the identity of a man she sees speaking with another inmate. She later learns that he is a priest who meets with prisoners as part of their last rites. The only problem is that she swears he’s Noel. If he’s not dead, then she needs to find proof of that before her impending execution.
Talia insists on a face-to-face meeting with Father Richard Decker, which comes to fruition. He bears a full resemblance to Noel, although his manner of speaking is slightly altered. What could have been a huge plot twist is made that much more complex by additional details that I will not reveal here.
DEATH ROW is easily a one-sit read that will be more than worth your while. This memorable tale manipulates readers from the very first word right up to the unique conclusion.
