"Clawback: Proceeds from an investment that is found to be fraudulent are confiscated and then redistributed to all investors on a proportional basis."
J.A. Jance hits the ground running in CLAWBACK. The narrative begins with a double homicide. Dan Frazier and his wife, Millie, have been slashed to death in their luxurious home. Upon the scene comes Bob Larson, Ali Reynolds' father. Despite his shock, he tries to help the victims but to no avail. They are stone-cold dead. He dials 911; a pair of rookies arrive and immediately assume that Bob is the killer. After all, he is covered in blood and has a small knife in his pocket, plus what appears to be the murder weapon is in his car.
"[T]he body count rises, making the twists and turns of this suspenseful mystery all the more exciting. Readers will find themselves on the edge of their seats as they move through the story."
Bob is taken to the police station, made to surrender his clothes and subjected to hours of questioning. In the meantime, Ali's mother, Edie, is trying to reach her husband, who is not answering his cell phone. He seems to have vanished. Ali and her husband, B. Simpson, finally find her father and bring a high-powered attorney who is also a friend with them to the police station. Detective Eric Drinkwater appears on the scene, and Ali loses her temper because he didn't offer her father any food or drink over the hours he was detained.
The reason Bob went to see Dan was because he and his wife were devastated by the fact that they were scammed in a Ponzi scheme, created by the man they thought was a friend who was looking out for their interests. They lost all of their money and were afraid they would have to move out of their upscale retirement home, and one or both of them would have to go back to work. Ali, B. and their lawyer manage to get Bob out of jail, and they go to Ali's home to discuss things and make some kind of plan.
By the next day, everyone is assigned a job. B.'s company, High Noon Enterprises, is a high-powered data collection/surveillance/high-tech company that gives everyone access to all the information they seek. Ali puts her parents to work, for pay, collating files and looking for any anomalies.
Meanwhile, the body count rises, making the twists and turns of this suspenseful mystery all the more exciting. Readers will find themselves on the edge of their seats as they move through the story. This is J.A. Jance's 11th Ali Reynolds book, and each installment has gotten better or has been just as good as its predecessor.
