In Anne Heltzel’s second novel, CHARLIE PRESUMED DEAD, Charlie has died in an airplane crash. His body wasn’t found --- the only evidence is a bloody jacket. Lena and Aubrey are devastated, and go to his funeral in Paris. They both think they are Charlie’s girlfriend --- neither knows about the other. When they find out about Charlie, they don’t want to believe it. When they meet at the funeral, they decide to set off on a journey to find Charlie --- and make him pay.
I couldn’t put [CHARLIE, PRESUMED DEAD] down, and it made me want to read novels of a similar genre, which I don’t normally do.
I loved CHARLIE, PRESUMED DEAD. Although it reminded me of the 1980’s movie Outrageous Fortune, it was also different. This novel was so twisty that even when I came up with the craziest guesses, I was surprised at every turn. I couldn’t wait to see what happened next, and I was pulled into the story of Aubrey and Lena and how they each were dealing with Charlie’s death (disappearance).
The girls set off to find Charlie, but it soon becomes clear that they are going on a treacherous journey that may not end well. Is Charlie really alive, and is he waiting for them? Or is he really dead, and they are just setting off to find nothing? I loved the concept of the story --- it was very much a psychological thriller, and I loved getting into the mind of each of the characters. I thought it was beautifully done. I couldn’t put it down, and it made want to read novels of a similar genre, which I don’t normally do.
I thoroughly enjoyed the fast-paced storyline --- it made the novel even better because I didn’t want to put it down. It was a story that didn’t drag, which, combined with the complex characters, made CHARLIE, PRESUMED DEAD a definite keeper. This is a book to tell everyone about --- friends, neighbors, book club members and everyone in between.
