Edward “Teach” Drummond has just returned from spending the past year sailing across oceans, exploring the world. He is betrothed to a girl he doesn’t love and stuck on dry land for much too long. During his extended stay at his father’s house, Teach meets Anne Barrett, one of the new maids at the house. Through literature and lengthy conversations, Teach and Anne discover that they have a lot more in common than they had originally thought. As their friendship grows stronger, Teach and Anne are forced to decide what they truly want for the rest of their lives. And just as they’re about to make that decision for themselves, Master Drummond decides that he has an opinion about the situation as well.
[The author] did an amazing job creating a story with surprises around every corner… Nicole Castroman, if you’re reading this, please, please, please write a sequel!
Nicole Castroman did an amazing job creating a story with surprises around every corner. Just when I thought I knew the whole story, Castroman added in plot twist after plot twist, making BLACKHEARTS an incredibly exciting novel. I was especially impressed with Castroman’s use of imagery. I felt like I was walking alongside Anne as she trudged through the rainy city or sitting beside Teach as his carriage pulled up to a party. There was never a dull moment in BLACKHEARTS and I enjoyed every word.
As I turned the last page of the novel I was left with one thought: “I want more!” The story of Teach and Anne and Patience and Master Drummond and all the rest of Castroman’s amazing characters cannot be over. I wish I could read about them forever. Nicole Castroman, if you’re reading this, please, please, please write a sequel!

About the Book
In this stunningly creative debut, Nicole Castroman reimagines the origins of history's most infamous pirate --- Blackbeard --- and tells the story of the girl who captured his heart and ultimately set him on his path of destruction.
When Edward "Teach" Drummond, son of one of Bristol's richest merchants, returns home from a year at sea, he finds his life in shambles. Betrothed to a girl he doesn't love and sick of the high society he was born into, all Teach wants is to return to the vast ocean he calls home. There's just one problem: he must convince his father to let him leave and never come back.
Following the death of her parents, Anne Barrett is left penniless. Though she's barely worked a day in her life, Anne takes a job as a maid in the home of Master Drummond. Lonely days stretch into weeks and Anne longs to escape the confines of her now mundane life. How will she ever achieve her dream of sailing to Curaçao--her mother's birthplace--when she's trapped in England?
From the moment Teach and Anne meet, they set the world ablaze. Drawn together by a shared desire for freedom, but kept apart by Teach's father, their love is as passionate as it is forbidden. Faced with an impossible choice, Teach and Anne must decide whether to chase their dreams and leave England forever --- or follow their hearts and stay together.
