On Thursday, August 14th, 1969, Michael Michealson travels to Bethel, New York to see what rumors say is going to be biggest, grooviest music festival ever. There's a heck of a line up: The Who, Janis Joplin, Joe Cocker, Jimi Hendrix and more. Michael enters the festival with his friend Evan, his girlfriend Amanda and her two friends. The world buzzes around him with possibilities of a war draft and questions about college. He has no idea what the world has to offer.
Cora works at the medical tent at the music festival. She lives in the sleepy town of Bethel with her twin brother and her parents. She knows exactly what she’s going to do with her future: become a nurse. But is that really what she wants? Does she want something more?
When the two teens cross paths in Bethel there is an instant connection. As their relationship deepens, they start to change their minds about themselves and about the future.
THREE DAY SUMMER gave me the inside scoop on Woodstock and its surroundings, which I would never have known, otherwise.
I decided to read THREE DAY SUMMER because the description said it would be like ELEANOR & PARK by Rainbow Rowell, one of my all-time favorite books. I didn’t think it was anything like ELEANOR & PARK, but it did share one small quality: the descriptions of the characters. Sarvenaz Tash writes about a trait for each main character that is mostly considered undesirable. For instance, Cora is attracted to Michael's peach fuzz on his upper lip. I love that Tash wrote "weird" things about the characters, but I must admit that it took awhile for that one not to gross me out.
Tash obviously loves music. She spends pages talking about artists and the way music can move you. I like music too, but unless you know the music of Woodstock well, it's uninspiring, and sometimes just uninteresting. It would have been a great idea to have published a CD with the book including all the songs mentioned in the novel. I am not familiar with many of the artists, so it would have been awesome to hear the songs.
The best thing about this book is reading about Woodstock. I honestly had no idea where it was, how long it was or who went there. THREE DAY SUMMER gave me the inside scoop on Woodstock and its surroundings, which I would never have known, otherwise.
